The Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury is one of the cornerstone races of the National Hunt season and the 2013 version will be run on Saturday November 23rd.

The race is seen as many people as a starting point for those horses with Cheltenham Gold Cup aspirations and has been won by some of the sports equine greats, such as Arkle, Mill House, Burrough Hill Lad and One Man.

Recent winners include the mighty Denman who won the race in 2007 when routing the field by 11 lengths, despite giving away at least a stone in weight to all his rivals, and again in 2009 under the welter burden of 11st 12lb.

The race is run over a distance of three miles and two furlongs and on ground which is nearly always on the soft side of good, and quite often heavy. This puts the emphasis on courage and durability and only the stoutest of stayers tend to prevail, with the class horses at the head of the handicap tending to shine through.

There is always a great supporting card with runners from all the big jumps stables, and the two-day meeting, which gets under way on Friday, is known as the 'Winter Festival'.

Don't miss the 2013 Newbury Winter Festival on November 22nd and 23rd.
