William Hill Review

William Hill need little introduction being one of the members of the "Big Three", along with Coral and Ladbrokes, and if you are reading this it's odds-on that you have placed a bet with them, either over the counter in one of their many shops or online.

It's the latter that concerns us here and while we have some minor quibbles concerning their website (more of that later), they do provide a top quality horse racing product and punters who like a bet on the nags - either for fun or serious profit - would do well to have an account with them. If not, a tasty free bet just for opening an account provides all the incentive you need and we promise you will like what you see one registered.

When it comes to bookmakers with experience, they don’t come any bigger than William Hill. The company was originally founded in 1934 and, like main competitors Ladbrokes, operate over 2,000 licensed betting offices in the UK. In addition to shops and online, Hills have a huge telephone betting operation and claim to now have over 500,000 customers.

William Hill is one of the most trusted betting brands in the betting industry and have been listed on the London Stock Exchange since 2002. The firm now have 18,000 employees based in the UK, Ireland, Gibraltar, Israel and Bulgaria. The sportsbook operation was transferred from the UK to Gibraltar in 2009, saving the company millions of pounds per year in tax.

Odds and Markets
Like the other members of the "Big Three", Hills have to be a little more cautious when it comes to pricing up races as they have a large client base of walk-in customers to cater for and any 'ricks' could be expensive, although getting a decent bet on in the shops is easier said than done, especially if you are trying to get on the Pricewise selection first thing on Saturday morning! To be fair, though, they will stand their prices for a time and we've never had any problems online. They are one of many firms these days who offer Best Odds Guaranteed, meaning you can take a price safe in the knowledge that you will get paid out at the SP if it's bigger. Just don't expect enhanced place terms on the big races as extra places can be expensive in the shops.

Horse racing remains one of their key sports products and this is reflected in their range of markets. In addition to the standard win/each-way and forecast offerings, you can get a place only bet on - either 2,3 or 4 places depending on the number of runners - and bet 'without' up to three horses in the same race, not just the race favourite. With the latter bet, the finishing position of the indicated horse (price is in green) will be ignored. Hills have also started offering 'Insure 2/3 Places' and 'Insure Faller' markets, much like Paddy Power. For example, have a bet in the 'Insure 2 Places' market and you will get your stake returned if your horse finishes second, while 'Faller Insurance' speaks for itself. Click on the 'Pro Racecard' tab and it will be display all these markets in one place, which is convenient. OK, these sort of markets are not everyone's cup of tea but they will be a winner with some.

Now for the minor quibbles we mentioned earlier. Go to the homepage and you are confronted by a lot of information and it's not immediately obvious how to link through to their horse racing section. Perhaps it's down to the fact there isn't an A-Z down the left-hand side of the page, like most bookmakers? That's such a minor point, though, and to be fair once you get used to their site it's a relative doddle - the 'Horse Racing' link is at the top left-hand-side of the page, you just have to get used to looking there! As regards speed and functionality, we have no complaints whatsoever and you can get a bet on very quickly, which at the end of the day is what it's all about. We also like their rival to the popular Racing Post 'Ten To Follow' competition, called simply 'The Jumps', and they frequently air podcasts on site with a horse racing theme, so there's much to recommend.

Customer Service
This isn’t clearly marked out on the William Hill website, although if you click on the ‘Help’ link at the top of the page, you can choose from 170 FAQ’s or alternatively get in touch with them through live chat, email or telephone. They are available on a 24/7 basis and can resolve your query pretty quickly, irrespective of what time or day it is.
