2018 2000 Guineas result – Saxon Warrior evens for Derby after Classic victory at Newmarket

Donnacha O'Brien raises a fist in celebration after guiding Saxon Warrior to a wonderful victory in the Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket.

We bring you the full result of the 2018 2000 Guineas and update you on betting developments after Saxon Warrior produced a fantastic performance to hand Aidan O’Brien another Classic crown on Saturday 5th May.

A talented team of colts approached the post in the 2018 edition of the 2000 Guineas. Aidan O’Brien claimed a Guineas double this weekend last year and two of his horses held sway in the betting for much of the build-up. Racing Post Trophy winner, Saxon Warrior was one of the stand-out two-year-olds last season and he rubbed shoulders with Gustav Klimt at the top of the market, who scored a comfortable victory in the Guineas Trial at Leopardstown last month.

As punters piled into the 2000 Guineas during the morning, Masar was the name on everyone’s lips. Charlie Appleby’s stable have been in flying form this year and Masar claimed a wide-margin victory in a key Guineas trial, destroying Roaring Lion by nine lengths in the Craven here at Newmarket a few weeks ago.

Masar’s price kept getting shorter and shorter in the lead-up to the race and, as the stalls burst open, William Buick’s mount set off as the 5/2 solo favourite. Cardsharp and Ballydoyle third string, Murrilo set a brisk early pace, with Masar heading a small group of three on the near side as the leading fancies battle for position.

With three furlongs to travel, the pace-setters gave way and Saxon Warrior loomed menacingly to the front of the field. Donnacha O’Brien’s mount went from fifth to first in the blink of an eye and the duo never looked like being passed, powering over the line to extend his unbeaten record with a stunning Classic victory.

Roger Teal’s Tip Two Win was fancied by few before the race, but the 50/1 shot produced an incredible performance to beat Masar into second place. Charlie Appleby will have been pleased with the favourites display, despite failing to convert his Craven victory into Guineas glory.

Elarqam was nicely placed behind the leaders, but couldn't match Saxon Warrior's move and had to settle for fourth. Gustav Klimt never really featured, trailing home in the midfield next to Frankie Dettori and James Garfield. Another to take out of the race would be John Gosden’s Roaring Lion, who ploughed a lone furrow along the stands’ side rails to finish a creditable fifth.

Leading up to the Guineas, O’Brien waxed lyrical about the physical progress Saxon Warrior had made during the off-season. The only reason he didn’t go to post as the favourite was the fact many thought he would be gasping for a longer trip, but he showed pace and power in abundance today, causing his odds in the Epsom Derby to be slashed.

William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral have all installed Saxon Warrior as the even-money favourite to win the Derby. Betfair is currently offering the best price, offering 11/10 on Aidan O’Brien’s top three-year-old winning Britain’s most famous flat race.

With a step up in trip likely to suit, the Derby looks there for the taking for Saxon Warrior. He now has a realistic chance of becoming the first winner of the triple crown since the great Nijinsky back in 1970 and Ladbrokes are offering a price of 3/1 on Aidan O’Brien’s charge achieving that monumental feat.
