Michelle Payne, who became the first female jockey to win the famous two-mile race, began her Cup day in Tabcorp’s Flemington birdcage marquee where she joined trainers Ed Dunlop and Lee Freedman on Tabcorp’s Punters’ Preview panel. She told guests that it was her dream to ride a Melbourne Cup winner since she was a five-year-old.

There was $95.0 million in turnover on the Melbourne Cup race, up 5.7% on 2014, and made up of:

  • $54.3 million with the NSW TAB, up 4.3%;
  • $38.8 million with the Victorian TAB, up 7.6%.
  • $1.9 million with the ACT TAB.

In addition, there was $5.9 million bet on the meeting with the Tabcorp-owned Luxbet.

Tabcorp Managing Director and CEO David Attenborough said Tabcorp was once again delighted to be at the heart of Cup day for those who love the racing game, as well as those who have a once-a-year bet.

“It’s our biggest day of the year,” Mr Attenborough said. “Hundreds of thousands of customers visited our TAB outlets to be part of the race that stops the nation, as well as at racectracks across NSW, Victoria and the ACT. We also expect that by the end of the day we will have taken around 2 million bets via mobile devices.

“It was also our privilege to have Michelle Payne, Ed Dunlop and Lee Freedman as guests in the Tabcorp marquee on Cup morning. We congratulate Michelle on her history-making victory.”
