2015 Cox Plate field – Draw favours international horses as Fawkner gets barrier 14

  • Barrier 14 for Fawkner.
  • Internationals draw favourable gates.
  • Winx gets barrier 1.
Adelaide defeats Fawkner (grey) in the 2014 Cox Plate

Having finished runner-up in last year's Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), the Robert Hickmott-trained Fawkner has drawn barrier 14 of 14 as he aims to go one better in 2015.

The grey son of Reset is undoubtedly one of the most consistent horses in the land but will need to bring his A-game as well as relying on some luck and a brilliant ride by Damien Oliver.

Adelaide did win the Moonee Valley showpiece from barrier 13, but history shows no horse has won from barrier 14 in more than 30 years.

Last year’s Cox Plate winning trainer Aiden O’Brien has again targeted the race with a world-class galloper and has fared well at the barrier draw with Highland Reel being issued barrier 4.

UK jockey Ryan Moore will be looking for back-to-back wins in the race, but unlike last year when Adelaide swooped from last position, the pair is likely to set the speed this time or get the gun run behind The Cleaner who has come up with barrier 2.

Other internationals, Arod and Gailo Chop, have fared well at the barrier draw and will jump from barriers 5 and 8 respectively.

The highest rated horse in the race, Criterion, has come up with the middle gate (7) and will be looking to add the Cox Plate to his impressive CV after claiming Australia’s richest weight-for-age race, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during the autumn.

Now trained by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Criterion returned from an international campaign and resumed with an impressive victory in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Chris Waller’s trio have met with mixed results at the barrier draw, and while Winx has come up with the inside gate, Preferment and Kermadec have come up with barriers 9 and 10.
