2015 Cox Plate runners - Highland Reel popular ahead of Moonee Valley mission

  • Highland Reel backed for Aidan O'Brien
  • Fellow international Arod also supported ahead of barrier draw
  • Winx and Criterion share favouritism
Highland Reel

International runner Highland Reel has been well backed to win Saturday’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley and repeat Adelaide's victory 12 months ago.

Highland Reel will be bidding to give Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien back-to-back wins in the race by following in the footsteps of Adelaide, who became the first overseas winner of the weight-for-age championship 12 months ago.

The four-year-old, who won the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes in the United Stakes, will be ridden by last year's winning jockey Ryan Moore and that has seen his odds crunched into $6.00 from $13 with bookmaker Sportsbet.

Fellow international Arod has also been well-backed ahead of the $3 million showpiece with the Peter Chapple-Hyam's challenger firming from $21 into $9.00.

The third of the overseas contingent is the French-trained Gailo Chop, who is a $21 chance for Antoine de Watrigant.

It is leading home hopes Group 1 Epsom Handicap winner Winx, who is chasing a fifth successive victory, and Group Caulfield Stakes winner Criterion who share favouritism in the betting at $5.50.

As well as saddling Winx, trainer Chris Waller also has Kermadec ($6.00) and Preferment ($11) sitting well in the betting.

Fawkner and Hartnell are both at $13 ahead of Happy Trails ($17), who was runner-up to Criterion at Caulfield two weeks ago.
