The $6.2 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) takes place at Flemington on Tuesday and the track rating is currently a Good 4.

Track conditions can make or break a horse’s chances in a race so we look at the weather forecast leading into the Melbourne Cup.

Sunday will have a maximum temperature of 26 degrees and a 60% chance of showers; these will most likely be during the afternoon and evening. There is also the chance of a thunderstorm.

Monday also has a 60% chance of showers according to the Bureau of Meteorology with a maximum temperature of 19 degrees.

On Cup Day it will be partly cloudy with a maximum temperature of 20 degrees and a 0% chance of rain which makes it perfect conditions for the Melbourne Cup.

The Flemington track is currently a Good 4, the rail will be out 2m for the entire circuit and the penetrometer is 4.86.

Fame Game backers will be relieved that the track is currently a Good 4; the firmer the better for the Melbourne Cup favourite who hasn’t raced on a Soft or Heavy track in his 17-start career.

Trip To Paris will also get perfect conditions as he aims to go one better than his Caulfield Cup second-placing. The European raider has won three from 13 starts on Good tracks but doesn’t mind Soft going either with a win from three attempts.

One of Australia’s leading hopes Criterion handles all going and the stable may have been hoping for heavy rainfall as the five-year-old swims through a wet track. Nevertheless, the track won’t disadvantage the entire who has won four times and been placed a further 10 from 23 attempts on Good ground.

Max Dynamite enters the race having mainly contested hurdle events between April and July. He did win the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup (3300m) last start having easily beaten Trip To Paris who ran fifth in the event – so he is not just a jumper.

Preferment had won two consecutive events before a ninth-placing in the Cox Plate (2040m). Gailo Chop was eighth in the race and he has subsequently won the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) after racing in the best part of the ground (on the rail) on Derby Day.

Almoonqith is a winner of five from 15 on Good ground and his run in the Geelong Cup (2400m) was excellent when beating Dandino who would have been some winning hope in the Melbourne Cup. Very consistent and has claims on Tuesday.

The United States is one of three Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned runners. All three can win the race and will all appreciate the current Good 4 rating. Bondi Beach and Kingfisher are both prepared by Aidan O’Brien and have form around Trip To Paris and Order Of St George – the latter is a very promising European stayer that won the Group 1 Irish St Leger by 11 lengths.

Snow Sky, Our Ivanhowe, Big Orange, Hartnell, Hokko Brave, Red Cadeaux, Who Shot Thebarman, Sky Hunter, The Offer, Grand Marshal, Quest For More, Prince Of Penzance Sertorius, Excess Knowledge and Gust Of Wind round out the Melbourne Cup field.
