Australian horse racing bet of the day - Weir and Allen double coming up at Moonee Valley

  • Two selections from the Darren Weir yard.
  • $21 chance is over the odds.

Top trainer Darren Weir and gun apprentice Ben Allen will combine for three rides at Moonee Valley on Friday morning (UK time), and a couple in particular are worth wagering on.

Firstly, Allen is in great form and riding with supreme confidence, and last Friday night he rode six horses at Moonee Valley and recorded two wins and three 2nd placings – he’ll go into Friday’s meeting with a belief that he can win.

We all know Weir is one of the best horsemen going around, and everything he saddles up has to be respected – even a $21 chance that I think is ready to produce a big run.

Here are my two specials for Moonee Valley:

Race 7 - MARCUS OLDHAM AGRICULTURE HANDICAP (1200m) 10:30am

There is no doubting LABUAN STAR has some talent and I think he may have turned the corner this campaign.

He saluted for us earlier in the month as my RBOTD and now carries the same weight in the same grade after Allen’s 2kg claim.

He was disappointing second-up last campaign, but although he didn’t win when second-up in his first preparation, he was extremely unlucky and should have won.

Both of his Moonee Valley runs have been good on Soft and Heavy tracks, but I think this bloke wants a Good track to show his best and will get that on Friday night.

He can land in the box seat from barrier 2, click up on the corner and win running away from them.

Selection - LABUAN STAR (5/2, bet365)

Race 8 - MARCUS OLDHAM AGRIBUSINESS HANDICAP (1500m) 11am

This is the race where we can really find some value with a $21 chance. The form of KRACKEN may look very ordinary, but again, this is a horse that wants good ground.

He finished 8.8 lengths from the winner on a Soft track last campaign and then ran a good race at Ballarat before winning at Moonee Valley over 1600m.

All of his runs this campaign have been on rain-affected tracks or synthetic tracks, and I’ve got a hunch we’ll see his best on Friday.

He also won at his eight run last campaign at Moonee Valley and comes into Friday’s event at his seventh run.

Although he’s drawn wide in barrier 14, he’s the sort of horse that will go back to last anyway.

If Allen has any luck bringing him into the race at the right time, this one looks a great each-way hope at big odds at $21 & $5.

Selection - KRACKEN (8/1, bet365)
