Thursday's Australian horse racing bet of the day - 20/1 chance ready to cause an upset at Geelong

  • Alrouz goes well at the track and has upside.
  • Less weight and good gate will help.
  • Confidence rating: 65%

On what looks a tough Geelong programme on Thursday, there is one runner that looks way over the odds in Race 6, the IGA Liquor @ Ritchies BM70 Handicap (2233m).

Alrouz, a nine-year-old son of Elvstroem, tried to lead all the way last start over 2060m and tired late to finish two lengths from the winner while Tintaglia was an unlucky runner-up.

Tintaglia had to push for a narrow gap which did eventuate, and when she was clear, she attacked the line strongly.

She is a $4.60 chance in Thursday’s event, while Alrouz is a $26 chance.

Now, the thing about Alrouz is, he always takes time to hit his straps and generally peaks between his sixth and eighth run.

He comes into Thursday’s race at his sixth run from a spell, and he also carries 1.5kg less and has drawn an inside gate.

Last start, jockey Tahlia Hope had to bustle him out to go across to lead from a wide gate, and as a result, he got fired up and overraced in front.

There’s no doubt that would have contributed to him fading last start, and from a better gate this time, Hope will be able to let him cruise out of the gates at his own tempo which is generally fast anyway.

Alrouz is one of four horses in the race to have competed at Geelong, and from just four starts at the track, Alrouz has won two of them.

He has also won and placed from two starts at the distance, and if he can get a soft enough lead on Thursday, he should be able to offer a big kick with less weight and increased fitness.

There are no other natural leaders to go and take him on, and considering he held on for 4th last time, he only has to go one better to get into the Place dividends, and at $21 and $4.50, he really appeals each-way.
