Australian horse racing bet of the day - Two bankers for Sandown on Wednesday

  • Banking on a Weir double to finish the day.

Victorian thoroughbred racing takes place at Sandown Hillside on Wednesday and there are two standout selections than can get the cash for us.

My Wednesday specials come up in races 7 and 8, so it may pay to hold off until late in the programme.

Here are my two best bets for Sandown:

Race 7 - LE PINE FUNERALS HANDICAP (1300m) 5.30AM

Despite sitting three deep without cover last start, LASAYETTE looked the winner for 95% of the straight until her run peaked. She meets New Summer Night better at the weights and has drawn a good gate this time. Young jockey Ben Allen would have learned a bit about her last start and will give her every chance this time.

Race 8 - THEBIGSCREENCOMPANY.COM.AU HANDICAP (1800m) 6.00AM

Although Oncidium Ruler is bound to be a major player in the finish here, I’m extremely keen on the Darren Weir-trained ON WINGS. We scored a nice win with this galloper first-up from a spell, and then I was keen on him last start at Flemington but was also mindful he could race flat. These staying types can often put in a bad run second-up, and although On Wings’ run was far from bad, he didn’t attack the line as I was hoping. The son of Medaglia D'oro won at his third run last campaign when stepping up to 1900m so the step up to 1800m now looks ideal. Brad Rawiller jumps back aboard and has ridden him three times for two wins. He should get a soft run around midfield and will be finishing strongly in the straight.
