Thursday's Australian racing bet of the day - Back 9/2 shot to clean up in the last race at Warrnambool

  • Form from last campaign holds the key.
  • Favourite vulnerable.
  • Confidence rating: 90%

It’s hard to sit around and wait for the last race of a programme to try and make some profit, but that may be the best option for Warrnambool punters on Thursday (race due off at 6am).

Victoria’s leading trainer, Darren Weir, has a great record at Warrnambool and is currently sitting on 20 percent winning strike rate at the track for the current racing season.

He saddles up 13 runners at Warrnambool on Thursday, so the law of averages tells us Weir should come away with at least two winners – the hard part is finding which ones are best suited and ready to produce the goods.

Four-year-old Bernadini gelding Prior Engagement kicks off his second campaign for Weir after formerly being trained by Peter Moody.

First-up last campaign, he contested a Class 1 race at Warrnambool over 1400m where he finished 3rd behind Baja Moon and Charlie Garcon.

That’s the run that gives me great confidence going into Thursday’s event.

Firstly, he had no luck and was caught four wide so had to ease back and try and get cover.

He did momentarily but was then forced out wide again to make his move and never really had any chance with 60kg on his back.

That was on a Heavy track and the Bernadini breed also go much better on Good ground which Prior Engagement will get on Thursday.

Apprentice Jordan Grob claims 3kg which also sees the horse carry 3kg less than his last first-up test at the track over a slightly longer trip.

He had also been given 26 weeks off when being transferred from Moody’s stable, but with a nine-week spell this time, Prior Engagement should be carrying some residual fitness.

From barrier 2, he can settle closer to the speed and will be ready to sprint hard in the straight after a soft run in transit.

I’m not keen on the $3 favourite, Eolande, who may get caught wide in a bunched field here, but Prior Engagement is sneaking under the radar and should be ready to produce a big run.

Selection: Thursday 6.00am - PRIOR ENGAGEMENT (9/2, bet365)
