2019 Cambridgeshire Meeting preview - The races and runners to watch out for at Newmarket next week

Fairyland (right) claims victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes last year.

We preview Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting, looking at the key races on each of the three cards and highlighting some horses punters can look forward to watching to when the Festival starts on Thursday 26th September.

Racing returns to Newmarket’s famous Rowley Mile at the end of this month, as flat racing HQ prepares to stage their historic Cambridgeshire Meeting.

A real ale Festival runs alongside the racing throughout throughout the meeting, but it’s the on-track action that will draw a capacity crowd, and the ITV Racing team, to Newmarket over the weekend.

There’s just one Group race for racegoers to take in on the opening day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, with a talented field of seven-furlong exponents set to lock horns in the Somerville Stakes. Ghaiyyath and Elarqam have both claimed important victories in recent renewals of this seven-furlong juvenile contest, while the following Rose Bowl Stakes boasts a list of winners featuring many star stayers.

Friday’s card get's going with the Listed Rosemary Stakes, before some top fillies clash in the Princess Royal Muhaarar Stakes. Day two's attendee's will then take in a couple of historic Group Twos, starting with the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes, where top Irish fillies, Alpine Star and Blissful could lock horns with James Tate's July Festival winner, Under The Stars.

Unlike the Rockfel Stakes, the Shadwell Joel Stakes is open to older horses and could be the scene of Benbatl's return to action. Saeed Bin Suroor's dual-Group One winner could face stiff competition as he makes his first start on British soil for over a year, with talented three-year-olds like Line Of Duty, King Of Change and UAE Jewel pencilled in to make an appearance.
The third and final day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting starts with an almighty bang, with a field of talented two-year-olds clashing in the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes. Aidan O'Brien accounts for the bulk of the entries for this prestigious Group Two, with recent stakes winner Mogul the most eye-catching of his many prospective runners.

Saturday's viewers will then enjoy a double-header of historic Group Ones, starting with the Cheveley Park Stakes. Many a future 1000 Guineas winner has tested their metal in this six-furlong sprint and Mark Johnston will be hoping Raffle Prize, who scored at the July Meeting before placing second in the Prix Morny, can continue her march towards next year's Classic.

Colts will then pick up where their female counterparts left off, with runaway Two-Year-Old Stakes winner, Mum's Tipple leading the early betting for the 2019 Middle Park Stakes. Richard Hannon's colt will face stiff competition in the form of two Group One winners however, with Ger Lyon's Siskin and French raider, Earthlight both expected to take up their entries.

Just when the crowds though they could catch their breath, the namesake race of the meeting rolls around and a large field of talented handicappers will enter the stalls ahead of the historic Cambridgeshire.

John Gosden will bid for a record-breaking fifth win in this handicap later this month and he currently trains all of the top three in the betting, with highly-rated three-year-old, Forest Of Dean set to be joined by stablemates Lord North and Star Of Bengal.
