2018 Cambridgeshire Meeting tips - Race-by-race selections for day two of Newmarket's autumn feature meeting

Day two of the 2018 Cambridgeshire Meeting goes to post on Friday.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the second day of the Newmarket Cambridgeshire Meeting.

The second day of the 2018 Cambridgeshire Festival meeting goes to post on Friday, and a seven-race card features some classy Group Two action with both the Shadwell Joel Stakes and Shadwell Rockfel Stakes heading up the day’s racing on the Rowley Mile.

The consolation Silver Cambridgeshire also goes to post on Friday’s racecard, drawing the second day to a close.

1:50 - Muhaarar British EBF Rosemary Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m ITV4
2:25 - Princess Royal Nayef Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m4f ITV4
3:00 - Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies) Cl1 (2yo) 7f ITV4
3:35 - Shadwell Joel Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m ITV4
4:10 - Derrinstown British EBF Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl4 (2yo) 7f RUK
4:45 - Mukhadram Godolphin Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m4f RUK
5:15 - Shadwell Farm Handicap (Silver Cambridgeshire) Cl2 (3yo+) 1m1f RUK

Ed Chamberlain and the ITV Racing team will have four races live for punters to enjoy, and Brian Healy goes through the day two racecard where he gives his race-by-race selections for Friday’s action at Newmarket.

1:50 - Muhaarar British EBF Rosemary Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m ITV4

Lightly-raced AGROTERA (3/1, Ladbrokes) can get back on the scoresheet here, and Ed Walker’s charge was impressive when landing the competitive Sandringham Stakes during Royal Ascot to register her second career success.

She wasn’t seen to best effect next time when only fourth behind the reopposing Unforgetable Filly when contesting the Dick Hern Stakes at Haydock; but she bounced back with a narrow head defeat behind Poetic Charm at Longchamp latest.

The Mastercraftsman filly could still have further improvement to come, and much less exposed than most of her rivals she can get back on the winning trail.

2:25 - Princess Royal Nayef Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m4f ITV4

STAR ROCK (3/1, Ladbrokes) is 2-2 over course and distance, and Hughie Morrison’s charge can maintain her perfect record at this venue with another success.

The Fastnet Rock filly arrives having finished a close third behind Pilaster in the Lillie Langtry Stakes, having possibly just needed the run over a considerably shorter trip on her return in France back in July where she finished fourth to Nonza.

A Listed winner at Doncaster on her final outing of last season, beating Vintage Folly, she was bumped at Goodwood latest when trying to challenge which might have compromised her chance. The form is working out though, with the runner-up and fourth horses home both winning since.

Still with the potential to further improve, she can give another good account and she ought to be in the mix.

3:00 - Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies) Cl1 (2yo) 7f ITV4

JUST WONDERFUL (7/2, William Hill) was an impressive winner of the Flame Of Tara Stakes at the Curragh at the beginning of the month, and Aidan O’Brien’s charge can bounce back from a disappointing run back there last time out when beating only three home in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes.

The Dansili filly was beaten around ten lengths, but she didn’t aid her cause by fluffing the start and she was always on the back foot after. That form then can be treated with some caution, and she is perhaps better judged on her earlier impressive Group Three win where she beat Peach Tree readily.

She is worth another chance on the evidence of that win, and still open to improvement she could well bounce back from that lesser effort last time out to go close in this Group Two contest.

3:35 - Shadwell Joel Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m ITV4

ZABEEL PRINCE (11/2, Paddy Power) had shown progressive form last term, winning three on the spin, and the Lope De Vega gelding bounced back from a lesser run in the Balmoral Handicap on his seasonal finale to strike on his first outing of the new campaign at Doncaster in March when scoring in the Doncaster Mile.

Roger Varian’s charge subsequently shaped as if amiss when finishing down the field in a strong renewal of the Lockinge Stakes; but his record fresh is exemplary and he could well bounce back after four months off to resume winning ways.

Faster ground is a slight concern, but he has won on good ground previously earlier in his career although his chances would be helped by rain. , He shouldn’t find the conditions here significantly against him however, and open to further improvement he could well leave the form of his Lockinge run well behind him.

4:10 - Derrinstown British EBF Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl4 (2yo) 7f RUK

ESTIHDAAF (15/8, Coral) made a good impression on debut despite meeting with defeat, finishing runner-up at York earlier in the month behind a potentially useful prospect who had had the benefit of experience.

Slowly away, the Arch colt looked in need of the experience but he was only beaten a nose, and likely to come on considerably for that experience he can go one better.

He had pulled clear of the third horse home, and with this better ground likely to suit he could prove a tough nut to crack if finding the expected improvement. He is one of three runners in the race to sport the Godolphin silks, but with the benefit of a run under his belt he can make the most of that experience to strike at the second attempt.

4:45 - Mukhadram Godolphin Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m4f RUK

RAHEEN HOUSE (5/2, Coral) proved himself a smart performer last term, winning twice which included a Group Three contest on the July Course here.

Brian Meehan’s charge also won at Ascot in October, taking a Listed prize prior to finishing runner-up at Newbury in the mud behind Best Solution. While he hasn’t been at his best in two outings this term at Ascot and Newbury, he could well be the one to keep onside here taking a drop back into Listed company.

Last seen finishing fourth of five runners in the Al Rayyan Stakes, he has been given a break following that run and he could prove hard to beat if bringing his best form into the race where he is the highest rated runner.

He ought to give a good account, and no surprise if he were to get back to winning ways here.

5:15 - Shadwell Farm Handicap (Silver Cambridgeshire) Cl2 (3yo+) 1m1f RUK

COTE D’AZUR (25/1, William Hill) finished third in the Cambridgeshire proper twelve months ago, and Les Eyre’s charge could be worth chancing to bounce back to winning form.

The Champs Elysees gelding posted some solid efforts in defeat in the first half of this season, but he got back on the scoresheet for the first time since scoring at Thirsk last May when successful at Nottingham in June, beating Red Striker.

He has disappointed on both starts since, failing to beat a rival home at Doncaster latest; but he was third in the Cambridgeshire twelve months ago from this mark, while his Thirsk success last term also came off this rating.

He could bounce back returned to this venue, where he has made the frame in two of his three starts on the Rowley Mile.
