2019 Future Champions Festival tips - Selections for every race on day one of Newmarket's big Friday fixture

Newmarket hosts day one of the Future Champions Festival meeting on Friday featuring the Group One Fillies' Mile.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and best bets for every race on the opening day of the Future Champions Festival at Newmarket, featuring the Group One Fillies' Mile.

The final big meeting of Newmarket’s 2019 Flat racing season goes to post on Friday, and it is day one of the Future Champions Festival which features Group One action on both days of the fixture as well as the latest renewal of the famous Cesarewitch Handicap which takes place on Saturday.

Friday’s racecard however is no less competitive or classy, with the Group One Fillies’ Mile the highlight of the day on a card which also features Group Two and Group Three action on a cracking afternoon of flat racing action at Flat HQ.

1:50 - Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (2yo) 5f

2:25 - Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (2yo) 7f

3:00 - Godolphin Stud & Stable Staff Awards Challenge Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 7f

3:35 - bet365 Fillies' Mile (Group 1) Cl1 (2yo) 1m

4:10 - bet365 Old Rowley Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo) 1m4f

4:45 - Godolphin Under Starters Orders Maiden Fillies' Stakes (Plus 10 Race) Cl3 (2yo) 7f

5:20 - Darley Pride Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m2f

The pick of the day’s action will feature on ITV Racing which will also have racing from the opening day of the new jumps season at Chepstow, and Brian Healy gives his selections for all seven races on a quality card at Flat HQ.

1:50 - Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (2yo) 5f

DREAM SHOT (12/1, Coral) could be worth chancing to get back on the scoresheet having found only A’Ali too good in the recent Flying Childers Stakes, and a reproduction of that run could be good enough for James Tates’ charge.

The Dream Ahead colt was a debut winner, scoring at Goodwood, after which he made the frame in outings at both Beverley and Sandown  in a Listed contest behind Liberty Beach.

Having possibly failed to handle the track at Goodwood when finishing seventh in the Richmond Stakes, he quickly got back on track with a Chelmsford win; and his latest silver medal saw him bounce back from a lesser run at York behind Alligator Alley where he was perhaps unlucky not to finish closer having met trouble in running.

This is a shade easier than his last outing behind Simon Crisford’s charge, and the likelihood of a strong pace and the stiff uphill finish should both suit so it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see a big run as he bids to get back on track.

2:25 - Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (2yo) 7f

STYLISTIQUE (11/4, William Hill) found only Daahyeh too strong here in the Shadwel Rockfel Stakes, and Roger Varian’s charge could prove tough to beat if she can run up to that level while easing slightly in grade.

Roger Varian’s charge is yet to win in five starts, but she has made the frame in all starts to date and her debut aside she hasn’t been beaten far in any of her outings. She most recently came up only a half-length short behind her stablemate, and she boasts solid claims with a repeat.

The Dansili filly was arguably unlucky not to have opened her account the time before, and her latest run puts her firmly in the mix here so every chance she can go close if she can reproduce that last run.

3:00 - Godolphin Stud & Stable Staff Awards Challenge Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 7f

Soft ground is a concern for a few of these, but SHINE SO BRIGHT (9/4, Bet365) wasn’t disgraced on his only previous experience of these conditions and could be worth siding with to upset standard-setting Mustashry who heads the official ratings.

Andrew Balding’s charge has shown progressive form this term, beating Space Traveller on his seasonal debut in Listed company here in April, and he subsequently was far from disgraced when finishing sixth in the Qipco 2000 Guineas next time.

He was given a break following that Classic outing, and he narrowly outpointed the classy Laurens to win the City Of York Stakes in August, and he can be forgiven his latest run at Doncaster behind Sir Dancealot in the Park Stakes when last seen where he did far too much too soon having raced away from the main pack.

He is better than he was able to show on that occasion, and if he were to come back to his best form then it is unlikely he’ll be far away.

3:35 - bet365 Fillies' Mile (Group 1) Cl1 (2yo) 1m

A strong renewal of this Group One prize which features a trio of unbeaten fillies, and POWERFUL BREEZE (6/1, Bet365) can maintain her perfect record and extend her winning sequence to three wins from three starts.

Hugo Palmer’s Iffraaj filly was an impressive debut scorer here on the July Course back in August, after which she stepped up on that experience to defeat the well-regarded Boomer over this trip in the Group Two May Hill Stakes.

She appeared to win a shade comfortably that day, coming with a strong late run and despite needing to be switched was well on top at the line, finding plenty.

This is clearly tougher stepping into a Group One contest and taking on some equally talented and potentially smart rivals; but she’s clearly a decent sort in her own right, and if she can handle the forecast softer ground then she can give another good account as she bids to remain unbeaten.

4:10 - bet365 Old Rowley Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo) 1m4f

DEVERO (8/1, Coral) arrives here chasing a hat-trick of wins, and Sir Michael Stoute’s can collect a third straight success here.

The Dansili colt has won three of his four starts in all this term, latterly beating Claire Underwood by three-parts of a length at Newcastle back in July where he struck a shade cosily having travelled well into the contest.

That form is perhaps only ordinary, but he remains open to improvement and hinted in that latest win that he still had more to offer so a subsequent 5lbs rise in the weights may not prove enough of a burden to prevent a follow-up win.

Ryan Moore takes the reins for this hat-trick bid, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him post a big effort where he can strike again back on turf.

4:45 - Godolphin Under Starters Orders Maiden Fillies' Stakes (Plus 10 Race) Cl3 (2yo) 7f

Few of these have seen a racecourse before now, and with some notable yards represented there could well be some potentially smart types to emerge from the debutantes.

However, it might be worth chancing on Aidan O’Brien’s ELFIN QUEEN (9/2, Bet365) to build on her debut run at Naas last month where the American Pharoah filly finished in midfield behind Diedra, beaten around six lengths and crossing the line in seventh.

She showed her inexperience under pressure that day, running on at one pace late but looking a tricky ride; but she ought to have learnt plenty from that first run, and the winner and fourth horses home both went on to contest the Group Three Weld Park Stakes on their next outing although they cut little ice.

Nevertheless, the form could prove useful and she is open to improvement on the back of that debut run where could put her experience to good use here and she may be worth chancing to improve.

5:20 - Darley Pride Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m2f

FANNY LOGAN (11/10, William Hill) goes from strength to strength, landing the third leg of a recent hat-trick of wins at Yarmouth last month where John Gosden’s charge ran out an impressive three lengths’ winner over Bighearted.

The Sea The Stars filly is unbeaten over ten furlongs, and her hat-trick of wins have all come at Listed level; she was notably impressive the time before when routing her field by seven lengths in soft ground to run away with the Upavon Fillies’ Stakes, and she can take this step up in class in her stride.

Proven in these conditions, she probably needs to find some further improvement back in Group company; but given her excellent record over this trip, and still looking progressive with the potential for better still to come she ought to continue to run well and can strike again here.
