Dewhurst demolition – Pinatubo odds-on to win Group One by two or more lengths

Pinatubo romps to victory in the National Stakes at the Curragh.

Top bookmakers Ladbrokes announced yesterday that they’re offering 8/11 on hot-favourite Pinatubo to win the Dewhurst by two or more lengths at Newmarket on Saturday.

A three length maiden victory at Wolverhampton. A two length triumph in the Woodcote Stakes. An effortless Royal Ascot victory. A powerful triumph in the Vintage Stakes and a devastating nine-length destruction of his rivals in the Group One National Stakes.

Those are the form figures Pinatubo has recorded this season, a run of results which have resulted in Charlie Appleby’s colt receiving the highest-juvenile rating since Celtic Swing, who was handed a mark of 130 at the end of the 1992 season. Even the great Frankel only reached a mark of 126 as a juvenile, two pounds short of the rating Pinatubo will carry with him to Newmarket this weekend.

Too Darn Hot was being touted as “the next big thing” when he took part in last year’s Dewhurst, winning comfortably as the even-money favourite. You’d be hard-pushed to find odds of 1/2 on Pinatubo on Saturday, perfectly illustrating how dominant Appleby’s colt has been in the juvenile ranks during 2019.

Ladbrokes are one of the many bookmakers offering 2/5 on Pinatubo winning Saturday’s Dewhurst. They’ve clipped their price a little after runaway Group Three winner, Wichita was supplemented into the mix by Aidan O’Brien and Ladbrokes’ spokesperson, Nicola McGeady thinks this will make it a much closer race.

McGeady said, “Although most punters are expecting another star performance from Pinatubo this weekend, we believe it will be much more of a contest with Wichita changing the complexion of the race.”

This hasn’t stopped Ladbrokes from opening a special market on how far Pinatubo will win the Dewhurst by. Punters can get 8/11 on the favourite securing victory by two or more lengths, and even 6/4 on Pinatubo winning by at least three lengths.

To put this into perspective, neither Too Darn Hot, Frankel nor the most electrifying juvenile in recent memory, Shamardal won their Dewhurst’s by a three length margin. So, for Pinatubo to be priced up at 6/4 to win by that distance is quite incredible and it’ll be interesting to see if the market leader can live up to his lofty reputation.
