2018 Ebor Festival day three tips – Huge each-way Trixie at York on Friday

York races.

Our expert looks through all the races being staged on day three of the Ebor Festival and rolls three of his each-way selections together into this Trixie at York with William Hill on Friday.

The thrilling Nunthorpe Stakes headlines proceedings on day three at York, but there are several other races for punters to sink their teeth into. Stradivarius looks hard to oppose in the Lonsdale Cup, while a field of talented juveniles battle for supremacy in the Gimcrack Stakes.

Either side of that trio of pattern races, there are a couple of competitive handicaps and an intriguing maiden to take in. Our expert has taken a look at the three lesser races on York’s card this Friday and rolled his selections into this each-way Trixie with William Hill.

Friday’s Each-Way Trixie

Full payout breakdown at the end of the article…

1:55pm Sky Bet Handicap (Class 2) 1m4f

12 months ago, APPEARED carried the tag of favouritism into this opening handicap. Roger Varian’s charge travelled to York carrying a career-high weight, after impressive in some high-quality handicaps, but it wasn’t to be on the day as Appeared trailed over the line eighth.

The Dubawi gelding has suffered defeat on all three of his starts this term, following an encouraging fourth behind Dash Of Spice on his reappearance with two underwhelming outings at Goodwood and in the John Smith’s Cup here at York.

Form may not be on Appeared’s side, but those defeats mean Varian’s six-year-old goes to post three pounds lower in the weights than he did 12 months ago. Returning to a-mile-and-a-half should also be beneficial for this course-and-distance winner, who certainly has the quality to bounce back to form and challenge for this handicap crown.

4:15pm British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) 7f

Sky Defender shaped well on his debut and Beat Le Bon clearly has his supporters. However, the form of VALTAIC’s debut has worked out really well and he seems to have been overlooked in this wide-open maiden.

Paul Cole’s youngster carried odds of 33/1 into that race at Windsor and stayed on really well in the closing stages to snatch third. The clear winner, Dunkerron has gone on to run well in the July and Vintage Stakes, with second-placed Dirty Rascal registering three further runner-up finishes in high-quality maidens since. The fourth and sixth placed horses have also gone on to impress, winning well on their very next appearance.

Judging by the way he finished on debut, combined with the clues we can find in his breeding, this son of Power should take the step up to seven furlongs in his stride. Rab Havlin has been in fantastic form of late and his presence in Voltaic’s saddle can only be seen as a plus.

4:50pm Nationwide Accident Repair Services Handicap (Class 2) 1m

Just like rival Crack On Crack On, CORROSIVE was on a recovery mission at Ascot following a sluggish start. Clive Cox’s charge powered home to win the race in fantastic fashion, with Corrosive also producing a strong finish to claim the fourth and final place.

After winning on his handicap debut at Ascot, Hugo Palmer’s charge has now suffered three straight defeats, finishing eight in the Britannia at the Royal meeting before being nabbed on the line by Ripp Orf in a Class Three contest at Newmarket’s July Meeting.

Handicap experience can be vital in three-year-old contests like this and Corrosive certainly has plenty of that, most of which coming at a high level. Palmer has replaced the cheek-pieces with blinkers to try and help his colt get off to a more alert start and jockey Jim Crowley – who won this race 12 months ago – will fancy his mount’s chances of returning to winning ways.
