2018 Glorious Goodwood day five tips - Race-by-race selections for Saturday's final day racecard

The 2018 Glorious Goodwood Festival enters its' final day on Saturday.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the final day of racing at the 2018 Glorious Goodwood Festival, featuring the Stewards' Cup.

The 2018 Glorious Goodwood Festival draws to its’ conclusion on Saturday with another classy racecard which takes in a further seven races throughout the afternoon at the Sussex track.

The feature race of the afternoon is the hugely competitive Stewards’ Cup, a fast and furious sprint along the Goodwood straight, and it is sure to be another competitive renewal of the famous cavalry charge.

1:50 - Qatar Stewards' Sprint Handicap (Consolation Race For The Stewards' Cup) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV
2:25 - Qatar Summer Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m6f ITV
3:00 - Qatar Gordon Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m4f ITV
3:40 - Unibet Stewards' Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV
4:15 - Qatar EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl2 (2yo) 7f RUK
4:50 - Qatar Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-105) 7f RUK
5:25 - Qatar Apprentice Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-95) 1m1f RUK

The pick of the action will again feature on ITV Racing, and Ed Chamberlain and the team will have the pick of the action from the Sussex Downs as part of their Saturday coverage; and Brian Healy goes through the final day’s racecard where he has race-by-race selections for all seven races on the last day of Glorious Goodwood.

1:50 - Qatar Stewards' Sprint Handicap (Consolation Race For The Stewards' Cup) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

The consolation race for the Stewards’ Cup proper later on the racecard kicks off the final day racecard of the 2018 Glorious Goodwood Festival, and the contest could provide a clue as to where the best of the draw might lie.

The opening race of the day can however go the way of OEIL DE TIGRE (14/1, Paddy Power) who is drawn low, but Tony Carroll’s charge has struck up a real rapport and affinity both with rider Sophie Ralston, and this track where he is 3-3 this term.

The latest of those wins came two starts ago when defying a penalty to beat Zac Brown by just over one length, and the Footstepsinthesand gelding was far from disgraced when amateur ridden at Lingfield last time, finishing third off this handicap rating.

He was beaten four lengths there, but wasn’t seen to best effect having perhaps been held onto for too long; but his regular pilot returns to the saddle to continue their thriving partnership - five wins from eight starts - and while this is a significantly tougher assignment, the thriving seven-year old can give another good account as he bids to maintain his perfect record at the Sussex track.

2:25 - Qatar Summer Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m6f ITV

Mark Johnston always enjoys success at this meeting, and it could be worth chancing last year’s winner SOLDIER IN ACTION (12/1, William Hill) to bounce back to winning form.

The Soldier Of Fortune gelding hasn’t been in the best of fettle this term, and he has been largely disappointing in his runs; he has yet to finish better than fourth in his eight outings this year, and he was last seen finishing in midfield behind Withhold at Newcastle when contesting the Northumberland Plate.

He returns to the scene of his last triumph on turf - has won on the all-weather in November - where he is fully 9lbs below the mark he won twelve months ago, and while he has been largely out of form this campaign a return to this venue could spark a revival of fortunes.

2-3 at the Sussex venue in his career, he is dangerous to discount from this lower mark than when successful last year, and he can post a better effort than in recent runs.

Mark Johnston can enjoy a successful final day at Glorious Goodwood.

3:00 - Qatar Gordon Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m4f ITV

This is the easiest assignment DEE EX BEE (6/4, Coral) has faced this term, and while the Epsom Derby runner-up has struggled for winning form this term, Mark Johnston’s charge can get back on the scoresheet.

The Farhh colt produced his best effort when chasing home Masar at Epsom in June, having made the frame in both previous starts there and Chester in the Chester Vase.

The Johnston runner boasts winning form here, having struck on his debut, and following his Epsom Derby exploits he was a shade disappointing at the Curragh in the Irish equivalent prior to finding a couple too good again in the Grand Prix de Paris.

There is a danger that he may be feeling the effects of a hard season, having already raced five times in strong competition; but this is easier than anything he has faced in recent runs, and he could take advantage to get back on the scoresheet under Sylvestre De Sousa.

3:40 - Unibet Stewards' Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

Consistent GEORGE BOWEN (20/1, William Hill) could be one to watch in Saturday’s big handicap, and Richard Fahey’s charge - one of several runners in the race for the Musley Bank trainer - is dangerous to discount despite carrying a penalty for a recent success at Hamilton where he was a ready winner over Classic Seniority to claim the Scottish Stewards’ Cup.

Richard Fahey’s charge is also a York winner from earlier in the season, and he went close here in May under a penalty where only Raucous proved too strong by a neck on that occasion.

The Dark Angel gelding ran a blinder in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, finishing sixth overall, and despite carrying a penalty here he is officially 1lb well-in at the weights although this is a career-high mark.

The six-year old ought to remain competitive despite his additional weight burden, and he can give another good account in a competitive sprint contest.

4:15 - Qatar EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl2 (2yo) 7f RUK

CLOAK AND DAGGER (11/2, Betfred) stepped up on a promising debut effort at this venue in June to find only one too god on his next outing at Haydock, and Clive Cox’s charge could get off the mark now at the third attempt.

The Lope De Vega colt was beaten only a half-length behind Armageddon, having clashed previously with the likes of Main Edition and Dubai Dominion- both winners since - and with the potential to further improve for this step up in trip, he can go one better despite the presence of several interesting newcomers in opposition.

While he may prove vulnerable should one of the newcomers prove above average, he sets the standard on form, and he ought to be competitive.

4:50 - Qatar Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-105) 7f RUK

RESTIVE SPIRIT (3/1, BetVictor) looks a potentially smart recruit, improving with every run so far and getting off the mark at the third attempt when beating Timespan at Ripon on his last start, impressively posting a seven lengths’ victory.

He had finished runner-up the time before at Newmarket, but shaped as if the longer trip last time was more favourable, and likely to have more to come now trying handicaps he may have been let in lightly here off an opening mark of 93.

While the form of his win may only prove ordinary, he is entitled to further improve, and assuming the return to seven furlongs doesn’t prove an inconvenience then he ought to progress further and can follow up.

Ryan Moore can ride a final day winner at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday.

5:25 - Qatar Apprentice Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-95) 1m1f RUK

POETIC FORCE (7/1, Betfred) has been in good fettle this term since looking in need of the run on his return from a three-month break at Kempton in January.

The Lope De Vega gelding  has made the frame in all six subsequent starts, scoring at Lingfield in June with a neck defeat of Scoones and ending a 13-run losing streak.

Tony Carroll’s charge has continued the good work since, finishing runner-up on both subsequent outings at Leicester and at Ascot latterly, where he was caught late to go down only by a neck behind Buzz Lightyere under this rider.

He is only 2lbs higher in the weights for this latest outing, and he looks set to post another big effort under Poppy Bridgwater.
