2019 Grand National entries – Tiger Roll heads list of entries with Elegant Escape topping the betting

Tiger Roll (13) leaps over the water jump en-route to winning the Grand National in 2018.

The initial list of entries for the Aintree Grand National have been announced, with defending champion Tiger Roll heading a list of 112 horses entered into the biggest handicap in the world.

Tiger Roll made the headlines last year as he clung on for a famous victory. Last years winner looks likely to make the return trip to Aintree to try and retain his crown and could be joined by as many as 21 of his bunkmates at Gordon Elliott’s yard.

Former Cheltenham Festival winners Don Poli, Shattered Love and the Storyteller have all been thrown into the Grand National mix. 2018 Thyestes winner, Monbeg Notorious and this years’ runner-up at Down Royal, Alpha Des Obeaux could also make an appearance at Aintree, along with General Principle, Jury Duty, Folsom Blue, Rogue Angel and Noble Endeavour.

Irish rival, Willie Mullins came close to pipping Elliott the title last year and gallant runner-up, Pleasant Company has been handed another entry. Total Recall, Up For Review, Acapella Bourgeois and Rathvinden also feature in the 10-strong list of names entered by Ireland’s Champion Trainer.

Of the British contingent, Nigel Twiston-Davies boasts the most entries, with Bristol De Mai headlining his list of nine-possible National winners. Blaklion will have a third crack at the big one at Aintree, having been brought down at the first fence last year. Cogry, Go Conquer and Splash Of Ginge could make an appearance, along with a trio of “Ballys” in Ballyhill, Ballyarthur and Ballyoptic.

Three-time Grand National runner, Vieux Lion Rouge is one of five horses entered from the David Pipe yard. The Young Master and Carole’s Destrier make up half of Neil Mulholland’s possible Aintree team, with Paul Nicholls choosing to enter just three – Black Corton, Give Me A Copper and Warriors Tale.

Elegant Escape leaping the final fence on his way to winning the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow.

Colin Tizzard has thrown five of his top chasers into the mix, with The Dutchman, Sizing Codelco, Ultragold and Royal Vacation all penciled in to appear. The most interesting entry from the Gold Cup-winning trainer’s stable is Welsh Grand National hero, Elegant Escape.

An intended runner in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, a race like the Grand National looks well within Elegant Escape’s capabilities and bookmakers in unison have reacted, with Unibet listing the Ladbrokes Trophy runner-up as the 16/1 favourite.

Vintage Clouds will fly the flag for Sue Smith and legendary owner, Trevor Hemmings and he currently sits second in the Grand National market with Unibet. Tiger Roll then occupies the third spot in the betting, alongside Becher winner Walk In The Mill, Nicky Henderson’s Valtor, Philip Hobbs’ Rock The Kasbah and Pleasant Company.

*Current Grand National (6/4/19 Aintree) betting with Unibet*
16/1 Elegant Escape, 20/1 Vintage Clouds, 25/1 Tiger Roll, Pleasant Company, Walk In The Mill, Valtor, Rock The Kasbah, Rathvinden, Alpha Des Oebaux, 33/1 Lake View Lad, General Principle, Ballyoptic, Mall Dini, Step Back, Abolitionist, Anibale Fly, 40/1 Bar
