2018 Grand National Result - Tiger Roll holds on to deny Pleasant Company in thrilling Aintree finish

Tiger Roll (right) beats Pleasant Company (left) in the Grand National.

We bring you the full result of the 2018 running of the Grand National, as Tiger Roll stays strong to hand Gordon Elliott a second Aintree triumph.

The Aintree turf may have been treacherously soft, but Merseyside was bathed in sunshine on Saturday afternoon as 38 horses approached the starter’s flag in the Grand National.

The battle for favouritism in the build-up to the race was incredibly close and it was only in the hour leading up to the race that Total Recall established a clear lead. Willie Mullins’ Ladbrokes Trophy winner was last seen taking a tumble in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but that didn’t stop punters pushing Total Recall into lone 8/1 favouritism.

Blaklion had led the Grand National betting for much of the season, as Nigel Twiston-Davies’ star looked to improve on last years’ fourth. Tiger Roll moved into Aintree contention after winning his third Cheltenham Festival crown and he was aiming to improve on stablemate Cause Of Causes’ finish last year, who was edged out by One For Arthur after winning the Cross Country at Cheltenham.

Anibale Fly ran a storming race to cross the line third in the Gold Cup and AJ Martin’s chaser was fancied by plenty in the know. Seeyouatmidnight came to Aintree on the back of just one seasonal outing, but Sandy Thomson’s charge had plenty of supporters and set out to try and bring the Grand National trophy back to Scotland for the second successive season.

The big gamble of the week was Ross O’Sullivan’s Baie Des Iles. Wife, Katie Walsh was in the saddle and the grey mare was slashed from 40/1 into 16s over the preceding days. Sue Smith saddled 2013 winner Auroras Encore and her leading fancy, I Just Know was the best-backed horse of the day, carrying a price of 16/1 to post.

Aintree attendees and the millions of fans watching around the world were hoping they would see a clean start and, thankfully, they got their wish, as the full field bounced off at the first time of asking.

The Twiston-Davies family fairytale ended at the first as Blaklion bowed out. I Just Know seemed to be jumping well at the front of the field, but he came down on his first look at Bechers Brook. Entering the final circuit, Ucello Conti cut out the running, with a whole host of horses placed nicely in behind.

A blunder-filled performance from Total Recall saw the favourite lose ground rapidly and, for the second successive season, Daryl Jacob’s afternoon on Ucello Conti came to an abrupt end. Pleasant Company moved to the front of the field entering the final half-mile, but David Mullins’ mount was stalked every step of the way by my selection, Tiger Roll.

Davy Russell reached to high-five a fan after winning the Grand National with Tiger Roll.

Davy Russell’s trusty steed jumped himself to the front as the leading pair established a clear advantage and the finish soon seemed like a foregone conclusion as Tiger Roll produced a wonderful leap at the last. Russell drove his mount towards the line rounding the elbow, but Pleasant Company fought back. Mullins’ mount was eating into Tiger Roll’s advantage with every stride, until the line came to save Gordon Elliott’s champion.

Davy Russell looked to the heavens as the result of the photo finish was announced. The two-time Grand National winner paid tribute to great friend Pat Smullen, who’s battling bravely against a brain tumour, as Gordon Elliott moved forward to lift the Grand National trophy for the second time.

Ireland dominated at the Cheltenham Festival and it was a similar story today, as Tiger Roll’s stablemate, Bless The Wings beat Anibale Fly to fourth. Milansbar was the highest placed of the British finishers, as the brilliant Bryony Frost celebrated a fifth-place finish on her first crack at the world’s greatest horse race.
