12 months after his narrow victory over Pleasant Company, Tiger Roll returned to Aintree, looking to retain his Grand National crown. Gordon Elliott’s stable star shot to the head of the betting after sealing his fourth Cheltenham Festival crown and the style in which he destroyed his rivals in the Cross Country made Tiger Roll one of the shortest-priced ante-post favourites the Grand National had ever seen.

Many in the sport feared the favourite would simply be too classy for his rivals and it was reported that history-making, second-straight victory for Tiger Roll would cost the bookmakers over £100m. Yet, the sight of Tiger Roll drifting before the start of the race came as no surprise either, as punters around the world pinned their hopes to many of the remaining 39 runners.

Along with the returning king, Rathvinden was the name on many expert’s lips leading up to the race. Willie Mullins’ 2018 National Hunt Chase winner was eight-pounds well-in at the weights, having triumphed in the Bobbyjo Chase on his only start of the season and many were predicting Ruby Walsh would ride his third winner in this most famous of handicaps.

Barry Geraghty suffered a broken leg on day two at Aintree, allowing Mark Walsh to step in and Tony Martin’s ride Gold Cup runner-up, Anibale Fly. Tiger Roll’s stablemate, Jury Duty sat prominently in the betting, alongside the two greys baring the silks of legendary owner Trevor Hemmings, Vintage Clouds and Lake View Lad.

During the day, Tea For Two and Livelovelaugh caught the imagination of the public, coming into 33s and 25/1 respectively. In the hours before the off, money poured in for Anibale Fly, Jury Duty, last year’s unlucky loser, Pleasant Company and Irish National Trial winner, Dounikos. Punters went in again on Joe Farrell, who slipped into the field as the 40th runner, and Rock The Kasbah, who was bidding to give Champion Jockey, Richard Johnson his first victory in Aintree’s main event.

Vintage Clouds was another to receive support before the off, but Sue Smith's charge, along with Up For Review, bowed out at the opening fence. Step Back, Go Conquer and Magic Of Light cut out the early running. They were soon joined by Rathvinden and Pleasant Company, with Tiger Roll settled in midfield.

As the second circuit commenced, Jury Duty, Rock The Kasbah and General Principle exited proceedings. Four from home, Rathvinden made a shuddering error, Pleasant Company unseated his rider, but Davy Russell sat cooly on the favourite and Tiger Roll moved into contention.

Magic Of Light, the only mare in the race, was running a blinder for Jessica Harrington. Rathvinden ploughed on after a significant blunder, but there was nothing either could do to deny Tiger Roll making history. Davy Russell saluted the crowd as Gordon Elliott's star sauntered over the line, becoming the first horse since the iconic Red Rum to win back-to-back Grand Nationals.

Becher Chase winner, Walk In The Mill was the first British contender to cross the line. Robert Walford's charge edged Anibale Fly, who ran another fine race under top-weight, into fifth but today was all about one horse, an icon of the modern era and the finest racehorse since the great Red Rum. C'mon the Tiger!
