2019 Grand National weights revealed – Bristol De Mai tops entries with 14 Gordon Elliott entrants in top 40

Gordon Elliott grabs Davy Russell's arm in celebration after Tiger Roll's Grand National triumph.

The weights have been revealed for the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday 6th April, with 14 of Gordon Elliott’s finest sitting in the current top 40.

The announcing of the weights is always a crucial moment in any trainers’ plans for the Grand National. From this point onwards, anything an Aintree entrant achieves will not be added onto it’s back come the world’s most famous handicap, a fact Tiger Roll exploited last season, as he won the Grand National off 10-13 despite a fantastic victory at the Cheltenham Festival.

Last year’s victory has been handed a rating nine-pound higher than that he carried to victory last year. Pleasant Company, gallant runner-up to Tiger Roll in 2019, has also earned the wrath of the handicapper and Willie Mullins charge will attempt to go one better with seven pounds more on his back.

Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Bristol De Mai leads the way at the head of the weights and will have to carry 11-10 if he bids for Grand National glory after a tilt at the Gold Cup. Anibale Fly, who placed in both the Gold Cup and the National last season, will have to deal with the second-highest weight burden, with Alpha Des Obeaux, Elegant Escape and The Storyteller rounding off the top five.

Once the list of weights was revealed, punters piled into Paul Nicholls' Give Me A Copper. The Sir Alex Ferguson-owned chaser made an encouraging return to racing at Sandown last week and was clipped into 33s from 40/1 by William Hill. He will, however, need a bit of luck to get into the race, sitting down in 60th spot on the list.

Only 40 runners will be allowed to take their chance in the world’s most famous handicap, leaving those sitting outside that magic number with a nervous wait to see how many of the current top 40 exit the entries. Former Aintree bowl winner, Tea For Two, along with fancied horses like Ramses De Teille and Mall Dini all currently sit between 41 and 50 in the entries and connections will be hoping their horses will be allowed to take their chance.

Those hoping that Gordon Elliott will trim his Aintree team could be waiting a long time, however. The two-time Grand National winning trainer has 12 horses sitting inside the current top 40 and would like to have even more pushed into the final field, to give him the best chance of landing a hat-trick.

“I’ll run as many as I can get in.” Elliott told the Racing Post. “We’ve won it twice and we want to win it again. If I can get ten or 15 in there I’ll definitely run them.”

“We look forward to it and it’s a race we want to win. We’ll try to get them all there first but I’ll run as many as I can. Tiger Roll has a very hard task, he has a lot more weight this year but we’ll see what happens.”
