Longchamp tips Sunday 15 September - Race-by-race selections for Sunday's classy French racing action

Longchamp are racing on Sunday with the Group One Prix Vermeille.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections on a top-quality racecard in France at Longchamp which features Group One action.

While the bulk of Sunday’s focus will be on the Curragh and Irish Champions’ Weekend, there is some top-class horse racing action going to post at Longchamp on Sunday where the Group Pne Prix Vermeille takes centre stage at the Paris venue on a card which also features Group Two and Group Three racing action.

1:35 - Qatar Prix Foy (Group 2) (4yo+) (Grande Course) (Turf) (4yo+) 1m4f

2:50 - Qatar Prix Vermeille (Group 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Grande Course) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m4

3:25 - Qatar Prix Niel (Group 2) (3yo) (Grande Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m4f

4:00 - Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert (Group 3) (3yo+) (Sprint Course) (Turf) (3yo+) 5f

4:35 - Qatar Prix du Pin (Group 3) (3yo+) (New Course: 2nd Post) (Turf) (3yo+) 7f

Brian Healy looks at the pick of Sunday’s classy horse racing action in France and gives his race-by-race selections for Longchamp’s quintet of Group races.

1:35 - Qatar Prix Foy (Group 2) (4yo+) (Grande Course) (Turf) (4yo+) 1m4f

WALDGEIST (8/15, Ladbrokes) is a classy performer, and Andre Fabre’s charge should get back to winning ways dropping down into a Group Two contest.

The Galileo colt won this race twelve months ago during a successful campaign which also saw him capture a Group One prize, and he has proven himself to be as good as ever this time around with a second Group One success in the Prix Ganay back in April.

He has been unlucky to come up against Crystal Ocean and Enable in successive starts at Ascot, but he faces nothing of that calibre here and should prove very hard to beat.

John Gosden could hold the answers here where he saddles both Star Catcher and Anapurna, and it may be significant that Frankie Dettori elects to ride the former after her recent wins in both the Ribblesdale Stakes and the Irish Oaks.

However, it could be worth chancing on PINK DOGWOOD (6/1, Ladbrokes) to uspet the applecart despite having a bit to find on form with both of the Gosden horses.

Aidan O’Brien’s charge was just run down late by Anapurna in the Epsom Oaks, but although beaten in the Irish equivalent next time out she could be forgiven that effort on the back of a slow start which cost her some ground and she arguably wasn’t seen to best effect in eventually finishing third.

She had filled the same position at the Curragh the time before in the Pretty Polly Stakes behind Iridessa, but she clearly found that trip too sharp and she could be worth chancing here to upset the Gosden pair if making a clean break from the stalls this time around.

With the yard in good form, it is too early to write her off just yet and it wouldn’t be a surprise if she were to step up and get back to winning ways.

3:25 - Qatar Prix Niel (Group 2) (3yo) (Grande Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m4f

This looks to be a penalty kick for Jean-Claude Rouget’s SOTTSASS (4/9, Ladbrokes) who should take all the beating dropping back into Group Two company having won the Group One Prix Du Jockey Club when last seen in June, beating the reopposing Mohawk amongst others.

The Siyouni colt beat Persian King by two lengths on that occasion, readily, and he had previously struck an impressive win at Listed level over the same Chantilly distance.

This extra quarter mile could prove to be right up his street, and he can show further improvement for the stiffer test to land a hat-trick of wins in what looks a fairly ordinary renewal of this prize.

4:00 - Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert (Group 3) (3yo+) (Sprint Course) (Turf) (3yo+) 5f

Consistent SHADES OF BLUE (7/2, Ladbrokes) already has a win in France to her name, beating the reopposing Forza Capitano in a Listed contest at Maisons-Laffitte .

Clive Cox’s charge has tasted defeat in both subsequent outings, but she has finished runner-up both times and was denied only by a neck in the recent Summer Stakes at York prior to just being denied back in a Listed contest at Pontefract latest behind Perfection.

Although that rival didn’t do much for the form last week, the Cox runner looks sure to post a big effort in a race that probably will be run at a furious pace with quite a few of these runners not liking to hang about.

That could play into the hands of the Kodiac filly who can swoop to conquer and pick up the win, and no surprise to see a big run.

4:35 - Qatar Prix du Pin (Group 3) (3yo+) (New Course: 2nd Post) (Turf) (3yo+) 7f

Things haven’t gone to plan for CITY LIGHT (2/1, Ladbrokes) since he was narrowly denied in last seasons’ Diamond Jubilee Stakes, but the Siyouni colt could be worth chancing to build on a confidence-boosting return to winning form latest on the Deauville all-weather where he beat the reopposing Tour To Paris.

Stephane Wattel’s charge has been operating at a good level since his hat-trick of wins last term, and he made an encouraging return to action in a Listed contest at Maisons-Laffitte back in April when finding only Inns Of Court too good.

Not disgraced in a second crack at the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, he ran out a ready winner latest by the better part of four lengths and he could prove a tough nut to crack if building on that success and showing the sort of form that saw him go close to a Group One win.

He’ll be hard to beat if he can replicate something close to that level, and he can follow up that last win.
