Saturday 17 August international racing tips - Picks for the best of the global action in France and the United States

Deauville joins Saratoga and Del Mar on Saturday's international stage.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the best of Saturday's global action in France and the United States from Deauville, Del Mar and Saratoga.

While Saturday’s UK and Irish horse racing action boasts nine cracking fixtures which includes the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury and the Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon, there is also some classy horse racing action going to post elsewhere across the globe with some top-class action in France, and also across the pond in the United States.

The French feature race sees the Group Two Prix du Calvados take centre stage at Deauville, and the Normandy venue also stages the latest renewal of the Prix de la Nonette; while in the United States there is a trio of Grade One races at Saratoga and Del Mar in the early hours.

1:35 Deauville - Shadwell Prix du Calvados (Group 2) (2yo Fillies) (Straight Course) (Turf) (2yo) 7f

Brian Healy assesses the pick of Saturday’s global action, and he gives his race-by-race selections for the pick of Saturday’s international racing.

1:35 Deauville - Shadwell Prix du Calvados (Group 2) (2yo Fillies) (Straight Course) (Turf) (2yo) 7f

Mark Johnston doesn’t send runners to France for no reason, and the decision to send WALK IN MARRAKESH (11/8, William Hill) could pay dividends for the Middleham trainer with the Siyouni filly going from strength to strength this campaign.

Beaten only a short-head on her debut at Haydock in June, she has since racked up a hat-trick of wins within the space of a month which includes beating the highly-regarded Light Blush in a Sandown Listed contest last month.

She benefitted that day from a typically well-judged ride from the front under Frankie Dettori where she made all the running and found plenty for pressure to see out the win, and there is likely better still to come from her.

This is a big step up in class into a Group Two; but she is progressive and has form on good and soft ground so these conditions won’t pose an issue. While she probably needs to find another jolt of improvement, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her find further progress and she can win again.

2:50 Deauville - Shadwell Prix Daphnis (Group 3) (3yo) (Round Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m

DELAWARE (7/4, Paddy Power) has progressed with every run this campaign, making the frame on each of his first three starts before getting off the mark with a win at this venue last month.

Andre Fabre’s charge ran out a three lengths’ winner over Dan, with the reopposing Dave a further length back in third, and the Frankel colt can confirm that form here.

He had possibly needed his first run of the campaign when finishing third at Longchamp in April, after which he posted a pair of runner-up efforts in starts at Saint Cloud and Longchamp before getting off the mark. Both those runner-up efforts came on softer ground, but the better conditions latest saw some improvement and she’ll likely get similar this time around.

Open to further progress despite the step up in class here, he can continue to find improvement and he ought to go well here as he bids to follow up that last-time success.

3:25 Deauville - Shadwell Prix de la Nonette (Group 2) (3yo Fillies) (Round Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m2f

SUPHALA (11/4, Paddy Power) arrives here on a hat-trick of wins, and Andre Fabre’s charge ought to go close.

A dual-winner last term at Clairefontaine in minor company, she took her chance on her reappearance in the Group Three Prix Impudence where she was beaten only a short-neck behind Watch Me who has since won a Group One at Royal Ascot.

Heavy ground caught out the Frankel filly when beating only one rival home in the French 1000 Guineas, but she has since bounced back with back-to-back wins at Longchamp in Listed company and at Chantilly latest when winning the Group Three Prix Chloe.

She won a shade readily that day over a field which included twice-Group One placed Imperial Charm, and there could be better still to come from her back up in class where this longer trip could draw out further improvement.

4:00 Deauville - Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage (Listed Race) (2yo) (Round Course) (Turf) (2yo) 1m

HELTER SKELTER (SP) made a taking introduction when successful on debut at Longchamp in June, and Jean-Claude Rouget’s charge subsequently lost no caste in defeat when denied only by a neck behind Well Of Wisdom back at that venue the following month when beaten a neck behind Well Of Wisdom.

The Wootton Bassett colt had the reopposing Saqqara King almost five lengths in arrears that day, and he looks well capable of upholding that form here with a repeat effort.

The winner of that last outing has since run well in the Group Three Darley Prix de Cabourg here, finishing runner-up, and with the potential for further improvement to come on the back of that narrow defeat latest then Rouget’s runner ought to go close here.

10:59 Saratoga - Alabama Stakes presented by NYRA Bets (Grade 1) (3yo Fillies) (Main Track) (Dirt) (3yo) 1m2f

The improving DUNBAR ROAD (7/4, Paddy Power) could prove a tough nut to crack and provide trainer Chad Brown with further Grade One success following his excellent haul during Arlington Million weekend.

The Quality Road filly has won two of her three starts, latterly returning from a three months break to deny Classic Fit by the better part of three lengths to land the Grade Two Mother Goose Stakes impressively.

This longer trip ought not to hold any fears for the three-year old who is bred to appreciate a stiffer test, and with the potential for better still she can take the step up in grade in her stride to extend her winning sequence.

02:00 Del Mar - Del Mar Oaks presented by The Jockey Club (Grade 1) (3yo Fillies) (Turf) (3yo) 1m1f

Chad Brown can land further Grade One success, this time with CAMBIER PARC (15/8, Ladbrokes) who ought to take plenty of beating if reproducing a similar performance to the one which saw the Medaglia d’Oro filly finish third in the Belmont Oaks back in June.

A three-time Grade Three winner, latterly scoring at Belmont Park in the Wonder Again Stakes, she was far from disgraced in that Grade One contest where she travelled well into the race but was unable to quite muster up the pace to challenge.

It is possible that the extra furlong that day may just have stretched her stamina, but dropping back slightly in trip could see her in better light and she can resume winning ways here.

2:30 Del Mar - $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Main Track) (Dirt) (3yo+) 1m2f

A dearth of big names takes some of the gloss from this Grade One contest, and SEEKING THE SOUL (3/1, Bet365) is only a tentative pick to come out on top having gotten the better of the reopposing Quip at Churchill Downs back in June when successful in the Grade Two Stephen Foster Stakes.

Dallas Stewart’s Perfect Soul entire had contested with credit at Meydan earlier in the year where he finished eighth behind Thunder Snow in the Dubai World Cup, and he had found only one too good previously in the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream.

Revised weights this time around means he’ll have a shade more on his plate to confirm the recent form with Rodolphe Brissett’s rival, but in an open contest he could prove the value call in a race where a case can be made for most of the field.
