Saturday’s Group One Double at Longchamp

Enibhaar is the obvious choice, having run so well over this trip during a bountiful summer campaign. John Gosden’s four-year-old produced a stunning display to win the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, before gutsing out a third-straight Group Two success in the Park Stakes during the St Leger Meeting.

The favouite has, however, been involved in many energy-sapping duels this season and all of her best performances have come on good summer ground. So, given the fact she could come unstuck on softer going, I’m going to side against Enbihaar and give her stablemate, LAH TI DAR one final chance to fill my pockets.

I was confident Gosden’s filly would earn top-honours heading into the new season, having ended her three-year-old campaign with excellent placed efforts in both the St Leger and the Fillies’ & Mares’ on Champions Day. Lah Ti Dar just about managed to edge past Rawdaa on her reappearance in the Middleton Stakes and, sadly, that remains her solitary victory.

Lah Ti Dar was well-beaten in the Coronation Cup, where she simply didn’t handle the tricky Epsom track. Two third-placed finishes have followed, first behind Coronet and Ziyad in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, before being thoroughly outclassed as Enable stormed home in the Yorkshire Oaks.

In contrast to Enbihaar, Lah Ti Dar has hardly had a taxing season, having coasted home at Epsom and Doncaster when it became clear she wasn't going to contend. She has more Group One appearances than anyone else in the field, clearly enjoys a good deal of cut in the ground and came close to winning a top-level contest on French soil earlier in the season.

The trip is a slight worry, but she seemed to stay it OK in last year’s Leger, only losing out to a sturdy stayer in Kew Gardens. There’s no doubting Lah Ti Dar has more to give than what she has produced so far this term and her odds add a handy bit of value to this Group One double.

That value is needed when you consider how strong DEE EX BEE is at the top of the market for the following Prix du Cadran. Mark Johnston’s stayer has been butting heads with Stradivarius all season, but the world’s finest stayer will not be present at Longchamp and Dee Ex Bee should prove extremely hard to beat in his absence.

Johnston’s four-year-old announced his intentions for the upcoming season with a couple of comfortable victories over two miles in May, outstaying decent rivals in both the Sagaro Stakes and Henry VII Stakes. Dee Ex Bee has since finished second to Stradivarius at Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor Festival, where he was forced to battle hard to overcome some worthy adversaries just to hang onto his runner-up berth.

Dee Ex Bee’s team swerved a fourth clash with Stradivarius at Doncaster, where the ground came up unsuitably firm. Johnston said at the time that two-and-a-half miles on softer ground would be perfect for his stable star and I can’t see a rival in this field who will be strong enough to outstay Dee Ex Bee in this historic Group One.
