Sunday 19 May international horse racing tips - Selections for the pick of Sunday's action across Europe

Auteuil hosts three Grade One races on Sunday

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the pick of Sunday's European horse racing action from Auteuil, Cappanelle and Cologne.

Some high-class horse racing action goes to post across Europe on Sunday, with Grade One action over jumps at Auteuil, while in Germany at Cologne the latest renewal of the German 2000 Guineas takes place where a strong UK entry features.

Not to be outdone, the Italian Derby also unfolds on Sunday with the 136th renewal of the classy contest, and both Frankie Dettori and Andrea Atzeni pay a visit to their homeland to take up rides in the top-class feature at Capannelle.

2:45 Auteuil - Prix Ferdinand Dufaure (Chase) (Grade 1) (4yo) (Turf) (4yo) 2m6f
3:25 Auteuil - Zeturf Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris (Grade 1) (5yo+) (Turf) (5yo+) 3m6f
3:40 Cologne - Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen - German 2000 Guineas (Group 2) (3yo Colts & Fillies) (Turf) (3yo) 1m
4:08 Auteuil - Prix Alain Du Breil - Course de Haies de Printemps des Quatre Ans (Hurdle) (Grade 1) (4yo) (Turf) (4yo) 2m3½f
4:40 Capannelle - 136th Derby Italiano (Group 2) (3yo Colts & Fillies) (Grande Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m3f

Brian Healy looks at the pick of Sunday’s European horse racing action, and he gives his race-by-race selections for a fantastic five races on Sunday across the continent.

2:45 Auteuil - Prix Ferdinand Dufaure (Chase) (Grade 1) (4yo) (Turf) (4yo) 2m6f

GOLIATH DU BERLAIS (8/13, William Hill) could prove hard to beat, and Guillame Macaire’s charge has tasted defeat just once in his last seven starts which came here over a shorter trip in the Prix Congress last November.

The Saint Des Saints colt has won his last three in succession, the latter of which was a Grade Two contest over course and distance where he ran out a near-four lengths’ winner over Bel Apsis, scoring readily, and he can find some further improvement to make his mark upped again to a Grade One.

Trip and ground are fine, and he looks the one to beat on the evidence of what he shown thus far so every chance he can collect again.

3:25 Auteuil - Zeturf Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris (Grade 1) (5yo+) (Turf) (5yo+) 3m6f

Willie Mullins and Paul Townend combined to win the French Champion Hurdle on Saturday’s card, and the Closutton team can pick up another big French prize with BURROWS SAINT (9/2, Bet365) who is 3-4 this season and ran out a cosy winner of the Irish Grand National when last seen out.

The Saint Des Saints gelding also won a Grade Three at Limerick the time before, and it takes a good one to win the Irish Grand National as a novice, which he did when beating Isleofhopendreams by two lengths in April on just his fourth chase start.

This is a tougher test of his credentials upped in class, but he is capable of better still and he has winning soft ground form in Ireland so these conditions shouldn’t pose too much of an issue.

With the potential for further progression, he can strike again in a competitive renewal of this contest.

3:40 Cologne - Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen - German 2000 Guineas (Group 2) (3yo Colts & Fillies) (Turf) (3yo) 1m

A strong UK raiding party for this contest, and FOX CHAMPION (3/1, Paddy Power) can continue his race-by-race progression to take this rise in class in his stride.

Richard Hannon’s Kodiac colt has won his last three starts, latterly beating Double Kodiac at Newmarket in April during the Craven meeting with a very useful performance.

An extra furlong shouldn’t present too much of a problem, and likely to find further improvement he ought to go well under Oisin Murphy so it would be no surprise if he were to extend his winning sequence to four.

4:08 Auteuil - Prix Alain Du Breil - Course de Haies de Printemps des Quatre Ans (Hurdle) (Grade 1) (4yo) (Turf) (4yo) 2m3½f

POLIRICO (6/1, Paddy Power) is the only horse to beat Goliath Du Berlais this season, beating that one at this venue in November over fences.

Things haven’t gone to plan since for the Cokoriko gelding over the larger obstacles, but he remains a very capable hurdler who bounced back from a couple of lesser outings over fences to chase home the reopposing Feu Follet over this course and distance when sent back hurdling last month to contest the Prix Amadou.

Also a Compeigne winner over the smaller obstacles back in November, Francois Nicolle’s charge should remain competitive, and while his winning form has come over shorter than this he does get this trip so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him firmly in the mix once more for all he probably does need to find a shade more against Guillame Macaire’s runner.

4:40 Capannelle - 136th Derby Italiano (Group 2) (3yo Colts & Fillies) (Grande Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m3f

AGENTE SEGRETO (SP) is improving with every run, winning his last two which includes a ready win at Listed level at San Siro last month where the Mastercraftsman colt ran out a two lengths’ winner over the reopposing Thunderman.

Nicolo Simondi’s charge looked strong at the finish of that ten furlong contest, so having an extra furlong to go as he pursues this top-class prize shouldn’t present an issue.

Likely to have further improvement to come, he should go well here and no surprise to see him collect a third straight success for all this is a step up in class and will demand more from him; nevertheless, he can prove equal to the task.
