Sunday's European horse racing tips - Picks for Sunday's european action from Deauville and Dusseldorf

Deauville host four classy races on Sunday.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the best of Sunday's European action from Deauville and Dusseldorf.

While much of Sunday’s interest will centre on the Curragh and day two of the Irish Oaks weekend, there is classy horse racing action going to post across Europe with Group racing taking place in France at Deauville, and also in Germany at Dusseldorf.

The feature race of the day in France is the Group Two Prix Robert Papin; while in Germany the Group Two Meilen Trophy takes centre stage.

1:35 Deauville - Prix de Bagatelle (Listed Race) (3yo Fillies) (Straight Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m
2:50 Deauville - Darley Prix Robert Papin (Group 2) (2yo Colts & Fillies) (Straight Course) (Turf) (2yo) 5½f
3:25 Deauville - Prix de la Pepiniere - Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage (Listed) (4yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Round) (Turf) (4yo+) 1m2f
3:55 Dusseldorf - RaceBets.de - Meilen Trophy (Group 2) (3yo+) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m
4:35 Deauville - Prix Messidor (Group 3) (3yo+) (Straight Course) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m

Brian Healy looks ahead to the pick of the European action, and he gives his race-by-race selections for all five of Sunday’s classy races across the continent.

1:35 Deauville - Prix de Bagatelle (Listed Race) (3yo Fillies) (Straight Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m

John Gosden sends TWIST ‘N’ SHAKE (8/15, Paddy Power) to contest this Listed prize, and the Kingman filly ought to go close having run well in Group One company latest.

Third on her sole start last term for Luca Cumani, she made a solid return to action to find only Maqsad too strong at Newmarket in April where she was denied by a short-head.

She progressed on that outing to win impressively at Nottingham, after which she was denied only narrowly in a Listed contest at York behind Magnetic Charm. Subsequently fourth in the Coronation Stakes behind Watch Me, she ought to go close with a repeat of that effort now that her sights are eased back to this level and she could take some beating.

2:50 Deauville - Darley Prix Robert Papin (Group 2) (2yo Colts & Fillies) (Straight Course) (Turf) (2yo) 5½f

Frankie Dettori could land a quick Deauville double with A’ALI (11/10, William Hill) who will bid to follow up his recent win at Royal Ascot when posting an impressive victory in the Norfolk Stakes.

Simon Crisford’s charge had shown plenty of promise on debut to finish runner-up in a decent Ripon contest at the beginning of June, travelling well into the race before a lack of experience perhaps just compromised her chances late on and she couldn’t hold off the challenge of the winner having struck the front entering the last furlong.

The Society Rock colt showed the benefit of that performance to beat Ventura Rebel at Royal Ascot - that rival subsequently ran well in the Weatherby’s Super Sprint - where he scored by a neck. He finished off the race strongly having looked outpaced early, and he should improve again for that run where he appeared to win with something in hand.

Both runs so far have come on softer ground, so it remains to be seen how he’ll handle these quicker conditions; but if the ground proves no problem then he ought to go close here with the potential for further improvement to come and he rates the one to beat.

3:25 Deauville - Prix de la Pepiniere - Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage (Listed) (4yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Round) (Turf) (4yo+) 1m2f

MUSIS AMICA (4/6, Paddy Power) remains with the potential for considerably better, and Andre Fabre’s charge ought to make a return to winning ways here.

A winner of her first two career starts, which include a defeat of Sea Prose at Longchamp last Apri in the Group Three Prix de la Grotte, the Dawn Approach filly was far from disgraced when finishing sixth behind Teppal in the French 1000 Guineas before being denied only by a neck by the top-class Laurens in the Prix de Diane.

There was a lot to like about her reappearance in the Listed Grand Prix de Compeigne last month where she might have needed the run when finishing runner-up behind Rolando, and likely to be sharper with that outing under her belt then she could take plenty of beating here before stepping back into Group company.

3:55 Dusseldorf - RaceBets.de - Meilen Trophy (Group 2) (3yo+) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m

Ed Walker sends INDIAN BLESSING (SP) to Germany to contest this prize, and the Sepoy mare can make the trip worthwhile by collecting.

A winner of a Group Three contest on her previous visit to Germany, claiming the Sparkasse Holsten Cup from Binti Al Nar, the five-year old has acquitted herself well on her global travels, which includes finishing third in the Grade One First Lady Stakes at Keeneland last October.

She has continued in good form this term having looked in need of the run at the Curragh in May, building on that effort to win a Listed race at Musselburgh in June; and she was far from disgraced when crossing the line in tenth spot behind Move Switfty in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot.

That run is discarded as she raced away from the field, and she bounced back with a good third in the recent Brownstown Stakes at Fairyhouse where she was beaten just over one length behind Surrounding.

If she turns up here with her A-game then there appears no reason why she can’t go close, and no surprise to see a big run.

4:35 Deauville - Prix Messidor (Group 3) (3yo+) (Straight Course) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m

Classy STUDY OF MAN (11/10, Ladbrokes) can get back to winning ways having had his sights eased for this contest.

Pascal Bary’s Deep Impact colt won twice last term which included the French Derby, beating Patascoy; he subsequently lost little caste in defeat when finishing third at Deauville next time and then acquitting himself well behind Roaring Lion in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Having ran better than the bare result in the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe, finishing just over four lengths’ ninth behind Enable, he has hit the crossbar on both starts this term behind Waldgeist and Zabeel Prince respectively in back-to-back Group One outings at Longchamp.

Beaten less than one length in the Prix d’Ispahan latest, he finished the race off strongly without quite matching the pace of the winner so a further drop back in trip to one mile could be a slight negative. However, he had Trais Flours behind that day, and he can confirm the form with that rival here if the sharper test doesn’t catch him out.

He sets a stiff standard on his Group One exploits, and his class could see him through despite reservations over the shorter trip.
