ITV Racing tips Saturday 11 May - Live TV tips for Haydock, Lingfield and Ascot

The ITV Racing cameras have live TV action on Saturday from the meetings at Haydock, Lingfield and Ascot.

Brian Healy looks ahead to Saturday's live TV horse racing action on ITV Racing and he has race-by-race tv tips for Haydock, Lingfield and Ascot.

After covering three top class days’ flat racing action from the Chester May Festival meeting, the ITV Racing cameras are back in action on Saturday with televised action from three meetings.

The feature race of the afternoon comes in the shape of the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock, and while on the flat there is Classic trials at Lingfield with both the Derby Trial and Oaks Trial going to post at the Sussex track.

Completing Saturday’s TV racing action is Ascot, where the competitive Victoria Cup is the main event.

2:30 Lingfield - RaceBets Derby Trial Stakes (Listed Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl1 (3yo) 1m3½f

4:00 Ascot - Tote Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (4yo+) 7f

Ed Chamberlain and the team will be on hand again with more expert tips, insights and post-race analysis on all the Saturday TV action, and Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections on another quality afternoon of telly racing coverage.

ANAPURNA (7/2, William Hill) very much looked as if she needed the experience on her debut at Wolverhampton back in December, where having totally fluffed the start the Frankel filly wasn’t given a hard time and she never got involved in the race.

However, John Gosden’s charge stepped up considerably in the wake of that outing to run out a ready five lengths’ winner over Dawn Crusade on the all-weather track here, and she could continue to find progress.

A further step up in trip could prove a catalyst for better yet, and if she can handle the switch to turf then it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her going close here under Frankie Dettori.

2:15 Ascot - Les Ambassadeurs Casino Handicap Cl3 (4yo+ 0-95) 1m4f

SETTING SAIL (7/4, Unibet) stepped up on a promising debut effort at Leicester behind Morning Wonder to score at the second attempt, beating Mt Augustus by a half length at Goodwood; Charlie Appleby’s charge was subsequently absent for 572 days before returning to action to register an impressive success over Charles Kingsley at Wolverhampton last month.

The Dansili gelding ran out a six lengths’ winner that day, always travelling well and just needing to be pushed out to score. That runner-up has filled the same position on his next outing, and now switching to a handicap he could have more to offer.

His Goodwood win came on soft ground, so these conditions will hold no fears and if he can avoid the dreaded ‘bounce’ following his reappearance in the wake of a long absence then he could prove a tough nut to crack in this contest.

2:30 Lingfield - RaceBets Derby Trial Stakes (Listed Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl1 (3yo) 1m3½f

No winner of the Lingfield Derby Trial has gone on to lift the Epsom Classic since High Rise achieved the double back in 1998.

Aidan O’Brien’s Anthony Van Dyck could prove a tough nut to crack, but EAGLES BY DAY (7/1, Coral) is chanced to upset the Ballydoyle representative having posted a smart effort latest to get off the mark at Salisbury last month.

Michael Bell’s Sea The Stars colt had finished runner-up on each of his previous two starts either side of a six-month absence, but he stepped up on his reappearance behind Blood Eagle at Wolverhampton to trounce Kiefer by seven lengths when last seen and he looks sure to progress further.

He looked very strong over the 1m 4f trip on that occasion, taking up the running on the bridle two furlongs out and coasting home. While that form may only be ordinary, it was hard not to be impressed by the manner in which he won, and with the potential for further improvement to come and proven over this trip then it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to see him progress again upped in class.

2:50 Ascot - Carey Group Buckhounds Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m4f

Only four runners go to post in this Listed contest, but SALOUEN (5/6, Coral) is chanced to avenge his narrow defeat in this race twelve months ago behind the reopposing Barsanti.

Sylvester Kirk’s charge is on a lengthy losing streak stretching back to his novice days, and his winless tally now stands at 15 without success. Nevertheless, he put in a series of solid runs last term which included making Cracksman pull out all the stops in the Coronation Cup.

Also third in the Grand Prix De Saint-cloud and The Grand Prix De Deauville, the Canford Cliffs gelding rounded off his season by finishing sixth in the Arc and ninth in the Hong Kong Vase respectively so he is certainly up to the task of posting a big effort dropping into Listed company.

Although beaten in this race twelve months ago, he could turn the tables with the softer ground more to his liking, and he should prove hard to beat if able to run to something close to his 116 rating here.

3:10 Haydock - Pertemps Network Swinton Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m7½f

DINO VELVET (12/1, Coral) has enjoyed some good success this term, striking wins at Market Rasen and Stratford, and Alan King’s ran a big race in the Scottish Champion Hurdle where he beat all bar the easy winner Verdana Blue.

The Naaqoos gelding wasn’t always foot perfect, putting in some less than spectacular leaps at his obstacles; but it was a good effort to chase home a Grade One winner who had contested the Champion Hurdle on his previous start.

He had won his previous two starts in decisive fashion, beating Eskendash at Market Rasen and then confirming the form with that rival at Stratford next time where he had Eceparti behind; and that race has since thrown up a couple of winners since.

He is only rated 1lb higher here following his Scottish Champion Hurdle effort, and a likely strong pace will surely suit. A repeat of that Ayr performance will surely put him in the mix in this contest, and it would be no surprise to see him posting another big effort.

3:25 Ascot - St. James's Wealth Management British EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m

RED STARLIGHT (11/4, Bet365) won three times last term, two of which came onthe all-weather, and Richard Hannon’s Pivotal filly subsequently made the frame in a pair of Listed contests at Sandown and here to round off his campaign.

The latter run saw her denied by three lengths in the October Stakes behind Di Fede on soft ground, and she performed with credit back from a break to chase home Sharjah Bridge in the Listed Doncaster Mile on her reappearance.

Not disgraced in the Spring Cup at Newbury subsequently, finishing sixth and only two lengths behind a subsequent winner, she might just have felt the run coming too soon and she ought to be fresher now following a month off.

Racing off the same mark here, she has form on softer ground and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her post another big run back taking on a smaller field of rivals.

3:40 Lingfield - RaceBets Million Chartwell Fillies' Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo+) 7f

PRETTY BABY (11/4, William Hill) showed progressive form last campaign, winning three of her four starts which included a defeat of the reopposing Dancing Star over this trip at Goodwood to win the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes.

William Haggas’ charge had a neck to spare at the line, resuming winning ways following an earlier short-head defeat in the Summer Stakes at York when denied by Raven’s Lady. The Orpen filly could pick up where she left off here, having struck on her reappearance last campaign at Redcar.

The form of that Goodwood success looks all the stronger now, with the runner-up winning the Group Three Sceptre Stakes subsequently; while the fourth won a Group Three at Tipperary prior to winning the Group One Prix De La Foret.

The fifth horse home has also won three of her next five starts which include a pair of Group two wins in Meydan, and there have been other subsequent success stories to come out of that race.

Sure to have more improvement to come this term for a yard which has started the season off well, she has proven she can go well fresh and every chance she can make a winning return to action.

4:00 Ascot - Tote Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (4yo+) 7f

RIPP ORF (10/1, Paddy Power) enjoyed a hugely successful season last term, winning twice and making the frame twice here where he landed a couple of big prizes including this race and the Cunard Handicap.

David Elsworth’s charge also made the frame in several starts away from this track, notably at Newmarket having also won there in July over one mile.

The Rip Van Winkle gelding shaped well on his reappearance at Doncaser in March, and he is forgiven his last run in the Spring Cup where he was poorly drawn and hampered mid-race.

Dropped 2lbs as a consequence, he returns to this track where he boasts an excellent record and the drop in trip on softer ground will be no issue. He has been competitive from similar marks in the past, and he is reunited with Hayley Turner who has a decent rapport with the five-year old.

Likely to get a strong pace to chase after, it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise to see him getting competitive back at this venue, and he could go close.
