ITV Racing tips Saturday 2 February - Live TV selections for Sandown, Leopardstown and Lingfield

The ITV Racing cameras have nine live races on Saturday from Sandown, Leopardstown and Lingfield.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and best bets across all nine of Saturday's TV races from Sandown, Leopardstown and Lingfield.

The ITV Racing cameras are back in action on Saturday, and while the planned coverage of Musselburgh as part of the day’s schedule of live TV racing has been lost to the elements there is still plenty to look forward to as Leopardstown and Lingfield join the televised schedule.

In addition to Grade One action at Sandown, the ITV Racing cameras will have the pick of Saturday’s action from both the all-weather at Lingfield and day one of the Dublin Racing Festival on a bumper nine-race TV line-up.

1:45 Lingfield - Betway Cleves Stakes (Listed Race) (All-Weather Championships Fast-Track Qualifier) Cl1 (4yo+) 6f

Smart sprinter KACHY (8/11, Unibet) has a good record on the all-weather, winning three of his four starts on polytrack and tapeta which includes twice here.

Tom Dascombe’s Kyllachy gelding won this race twelve months ago, gaining a short-head verdict over Kimberella, and having found only one too good back here in the All-Weather Champion Sprint he subsequently won at Chester when running out a wide-margin winner over Growl.

Also third to Battash in the Temple Stakes, he failed to trouble the judge in two subsequent outings; but he bounced back from a break and wind surgery to blitz opposition on the Wolverhampton tapeta on Boxing Day.

Likely to be sharper now, he can maintain his excellent all-weather record by winning this race for a second time for all his draw isn’t ideal.

1:50 Sandown -  888Sport Contenders Hurdle (Listed Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m

Although surprising turned over by Verdana Blue at Kempton in the recent Christmas Hurdle, BUVEUR D’AIR (1/7, Unibet) ought to be very tough to beat in this Listed contest, and Nicky Henderson’s charge can get his season back on track ahead of his Champion Hurdle defence in March.

The Crillon gelding was tasting defeat for the first time since being beaten behind Altior in the 2016 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle when beaten a short-head by his stablemate; but it is hard to forget the effortless way he brushed aside Samcro in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, and a repeat of that performance would surely suffice.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Nicky Henderson’s Champion Hurdler at Kempton, and he made an uncharacteristic error three out which may just have niggled him; he possibly didn’t find as much as Barry Geraghty hoped on the run-in, but he could hold too many guns for his rivals if coming back to his best.

The fourth horse home from that Kempton outing won the recent Unibet Hurdle, and he ought to be tough to beat in his bid to win this race for a third time before heading to the Cheltenham Festival to defend his Champion Hurdle crown.

Reigning Champion Hurdle champion Buveur D'Air can get his season back on track after his surprise Kempton defeat.

2:00 Leopardstown - Ladbrokes Hurdle (Grade B Handicap) (4yo+ 0-150) 2m

A hugely competitive handicap could go the way of OFF YOU GO (9/1, Unibet) who is forgiven his latest effort behind the reopposing Wonder Laish where plenty went wrong for the Presenting gelding, and Charles Byrnes’ charge can bounce back.

The six-year old had previously rattled off a hat-trick of wins, which included here last February when beating Deal D’estruval, and he subsequently returned from almost nine months off following that success to beat another of today’s rivals in Hearts Are Trumps at Galway where he gave that rival 9lbs.

An early stumble in his latest outing put him on the back-foot and left him in a poor position, and he probably did too much to get back into the race before fading in the straight at Punchestown.

He reopposes here on better terms with the winner of that Punchestown race and a couple of other rivals who turn out again here, and it would be no surprise if he were to quickly put the form of that latest run behind him with an improved effort.

2:25 Sandown - 888Sport Scilly Isles Novices' Chase (Grade 1) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m4f

A cracking renewal of this contest despite only five runners, and LOSTINTRANSLATION (9/4, Unibet) can continue his upward ascent despite the presence of unbeaten Vinndication and Defi Du Seuil in opposition.

Colin Tizzard’s charge had the latter in arrears when posting a very game success in the Dipper Novices’ Chase on New Years’ Day, looking beaten jumping the last before rallying strongly to win a shade cosily in the end, and the Flemensfirth gelding can continue to find improvement.

Twice beaten previously by La Bague Au Roi in starts at Newbury, he lost little caste in either defeat, looking a big danger to the winner on the second occasion in the Grade Two Berkshire Novices’ Chase before a shuddering blunder cost him all chance; and his form with that rival has taken a huge boost since.

The Cheltenham form from his last outing has also been subsequently franked, and likely to find further improvement he can step up again to take this prize at the expense of his well-regarded rivals with this stiff track sure to play to his strengths once again.

He has to give 3lbs to Defi Du Seuil this time around, while Vinndication has shown no signs of his progress halting; but he looks to one to keep on the right side of over fences, and no surprise to see him post a big effort here as he bids to follow up.

Lostintranslation can follow up his Dipper Novices' Chase win with success in Saturday's Scilly Isles Chase.

2:55 Lingfield - Betway Winter Derby Trial Stakes (Listed Race) (All-Weather Championships Fast-Track Qualifier) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m2f

WISSAHICKON (8/11, Unibet) goes from strength to strength, beating Big Country here latest when successful in the Listed Quebec Stakes, and the Tapit colt can strike again.

John Gosden’s charge was landing a hat-trick when running out an almost three-lengths’ winner over Michael Appleby’s reopposing star; while he was in receipt of weight from the runner-up, the manner of his victory suggested he won cosily and he may be able to confirm the form despite these revised terms.

The 2018 Cambridgeshire winner has only twice tasted defeat, but he sets a very stiff standard and still relatively unexposed he could have more to offer; he can confirm the form with Big Country from their last encounter despite an 8lbs swing in the weights.

3:00 Sandown - 888Sport Heroes Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m7½f

VIRGINIA CHICK (10/1, Unibet) has more on his plate to follow up his recent win at Chepstow in December, but Evan Williams’ charge can find a further jolt of improvement to strike again.

The Nickname gelding was progressive last term, winning four of his five starts over trips ranging from two miles to three miles, and having looked in need of the run when finishing fourth at Newbury on his reappearance in November he stepped up on that effort to see off Truckers Lodge latest.

That one didn’t do the form any harm when finishing runner-up in the River Don Hurdle last weekend, and possible that the seven-year old could pull out more despite being raised 8lbs in the weights for that success.

He may not have reached the ceiling of his progression just yet, and trainer’s daughter Isabel again takes the reins; the pair have combined for three of the gelding’s wins and her 7lbs claim could prove valuable once again. The Nickname gelding can find another jolt of improvement and no surprise to see him go close once again.

Virginia Chick (noseband) can follow up his Chepstow success with a win at Sandown.

3:10 Leopardstown - Ladbrokes Dublin Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+) 2m1f

Simply Ned loves this track, and Nicky Richards’ charge comes into this race on the back of a win here last time out when posting a Grade One surprise win over Footpad. However, he was readily brushed aside in this contest twelve months ago by a resurgent MIN (4/6, Unibet) and Willie Mullins’ charge can successfully defend his crown.

The Walk In The Park gelding had also beaten the same rival the time before, and following on from his win in this race last year the eight-year old chased home Altior at Cheltenham, and Politologue at Aintree where he was possibly just stretched by the trip in the soft ground.

The Mulliins runner ran flat at Punchestown on his final outing of the campaign, finishing fourth to stablemate Un De Sceaux; but that run came just 11 days on from Aintree and the outing probably came too soon for him.

Impressive on his return when beating Shattered Love and others to win the John Durkan Memorial Chase, he will have no issue returning to this shorter trip and he rates the one to beat here. He is unbeaten in three starts over fences at this venue, and given plenty of time following his latest Punchestown win he can mount a successful title defence.

3:35 Sandown - 888Sport Masters Handicap Chase Cl2 (5yo+) 3m

Houblon Des Obeaux is 9lbs higher than when bolting up latest here in January, but Venetia Williams’ charge is dangerous to overlook if turning up in the same mood. However, while DIVINE SPEAR (14/1, Unibet) ran poorly on his reappearance at Cheltenham on New Years’ Day, he could be worth chancing to bounce back to winning form.

Nicky Henderson’s charge won twice over hurdles prior to switching to the larger obstacles in the 2017/18 season, and having won his first two starts at Catterick and Ascot, he was surprisingly turned over at Musselburgh in a small-field contest prior to pulling up on his return at Cheltenham following almost eleven months off.

Probably in need of that outing behind Aso, that form is holding up and while this new trip will have to deliver a jolt of improvement in the Oscar gelding, he could well step up with that recent outing under his belt.

Still unexposed as a chaser, he remains with scope to do better and he is chanced in the hope stepping up to three miles could unlock further progress.

Divine Spear can get back on the winning trail upped in trip at Sandown.

3:45 Leopardstown - Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novice Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+) 2m1f

LE RICHEBOURG (NAP) (7/4, Unibet) was an impressive winner here over the Festive period, beating the reopposing Us And Them as well as both Voix De Reve and Mengli Khan when claiming the Racing Post Novice Chase, and Joseph O’Brien’s charge can confirm that form with his rivals.

The Network gelding was a very smart hurdler, winning three times and making the frame here behind Whiskey Sour in the Future Champions Novice Hurdle - albeit fortunate - but he looks an even better chaser and he won his first two starts over fences at Listowel and Tipperary prior to bumping into the potentially high-class Delta Work at Fairyhouse in the Drinmore Novices’ Chase.

Beaten only a half-length there, he was value for more than his latest four lengths’ success, overcoming a late mistake to score comfortably. Open to further improvement and still unexposed over fences, a repeat of that effort could prove good enough to see him follow up, and he could prove a tough nut to crack.
