ITV Racing tips Saturday 27 April - Live TV tips for Sandown, Leicester and Haydock

The ITV Racing cameras are in action again on Saturday,

Brian Healy gives his live TV tips for Saturday's televised coverage of the meetings at Sandown, Leicester and Haydock on ITV Racing.

Saturday’s ITV Racing televised schedule takes in six races across the UK, featuring the pick of the day’s action from the jumps season finale at Sandown where the Bet365 Gold Cup features on a top quality racecard which also includes the Celebration Chase.

Meanwhile, there is also action on the flat with one race each from Haydock and Leicester, the latter of which is a Listed contest; six races in total make up Saturday afternoon’s scheduled broadcast.

1:50 Sandown - bet365 Novices' Championship Final Handicap Hurdle Cl2 (4yo+) 2m
2:05 Haydock - Betway Old Boston Handicap Cl2 (4yo+) 7f
2:25 Sandown - bet365 Oaksey Chase (Grade 2) (for The Menorah Challenge Trophy) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m6½f
2:45 Leicester - EBF Stallions King Richard III Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 7f
3:00 Sandown - bet365 Celebration Chase (Grade 1) Cl1 (5yo+) 1m7½f
3:35 Sandown - bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m5f

Ed Chamberlain and the team will be on hand again with their usual expert tips, insights and post-race analysis surrounding all the day’s TV racing, and Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and best bets for Saturday’s live action.

1:50 Sandown - bet365 Novices' Championship Final Handicap Hurdle Cl2 (4yo+) 2m

SCARLET DRAGON (10/1, Bet365) is chanced to get back on the mark having won on his return to hurdling at Huntingdon back in January, and Alan King’s charge could get back to winning ways.

Smart on the flat, winning several times and making the frame in Group level, he wasn’t quite able to match the performance he posted in that win when only finishing fifth at Kempton in the Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle; but dropping back in grade for this outing he could be capable of posting a better run.

The form of his Huntingdon win is strong, and still unexposed as a hurdler he could well have the scope to defy what looks a workable mark stepping into a handicap contest. While he may have been abandoned by Wayne Hutchinson, trainer Alan King has wasted no time in securing the services of champion jockey Richard Johnston for this assignment, and the pair can combine to post a big effort.

2:05 Haydock - Betway Old Boston Handicap Cl2 (4yo+) 7f

A competitive handicap featuring several runners who are finding winning difficult, but WAHASH (13/2, Ladbrokes) is chanced to get back on the scoresheet and end his losing streak.

Richard Hannon’s charge posted his sole success to date on the Lingfield all-weather last March, but he has run well on several occasions since although yet to seriously trouble the judge. Nevertheless, he ran well in the Lincoln at Doncaster on his second outing back following a break, eventully finishing ninth having had almost the worst of the draw; and his latest third behind Petrus at Bath saw him finish ahead of Zwayyan who was thrust into Friday’s Bet365 Mile.

On the pick of last season’s form he is well-weighted from a mark of 96 if able to recapture his best, and the drop to seven furlongs could help to achieve better. A low draw is also a potential advantage as is his race-fitness edge over most of these rivals so it wouldn’t come as a huge shock to see him go close.

2:25 Sandown - bet365 Oaksey Chase (Grade 2) (for The Menorah Challenge Trophy) Cl1 (5yo+) 2m6½f

DEFINITELY RED (4/1, Paddy Power) looked as good as ever when winning his first two starts of the season, winning the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on his seasonal return and then following up with a win in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree.

Brian Ellison’s charge suffered a surprise reversal in a match with Captain Redbeard at Kelso in the Malcolm Jefferson Memorial; but he can’t be too harshly judged on that effort given that he was trying to give the winner 10lbs.

Brought down in the Gold Cup by the departure of Invitation Only, he looks the one to beat on these terms if he can recapture the form of his previous runs earlier in the campaign, although rain would aid his chances further.

2:45 Leicester - EBF Stallions King Richard III Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 7f

Sir Michael Stoute’s yard has started the new campaign well, and EQTIDAAR (7/4, William Hill) can continue the stable’s good spell on his return to action.

The Invincible Spirit colt showed good form last term, twice making the frame before causing something of an upset in the Commonwealth Cup where he beat Sands Of Mali by a half-length. That run was followed up with an outing in the July Cup where he was beaten into ninth behind US Navy Flag although he was only around six lengths adrift.

Possibly undone by the heavy ground at Haydock when last seen, he has been absent since; but this looks a very winnable assignment on his return to action, and a close runner-up effort on his seasonal debut twelve months ago suggests he is capable of going well fresh.

The extra furlong is an unknown, but he looks sure to give a good account and every chance he can make a winning return if the stiffer test of stamina doesn’t prove a negative.

3:00 Sandown - bet365 Celebration Chase (Grade 1) Cl1 (5yo+) 1m7½f

With Cyrname not featuring amongst the list of accepters for this final Grade One of the season, the way looks clear for ALTIOR (2/7, Paddy Power) to register another win and take his undefeated streak to 19 wins.

Nicky Henderson’s imperious star overcame some adversity in the Champion Chase to win a shade readily in the end, and he ought to confirm the form with third placed Sceau Royal from that race.

This very much looks a penalty kick for the High Chaparral gelding who has two wins in this race to his name already, and it would be a huge shock if the Henderson runner failed to deliver a hat-trick of wins in this contest to end another perfect season.

3:35 Sandown - bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m5f

Philip Hobbs saddled Monkerhostin to win this race back in 2008, and ROLLING DYLAN (20/1, Bet365) could be one to be interested in for the Somerset trainer, and the Indian River gelding has shaped on more than one occasion as if a stiffer test would suit.

The eight-year old gelding scored his last win in a three-runner race at Chepstow, last February where he beat Flintham by almost twenty lengths, and he has been relatively lightly raced since with just five outings this campaign.

Fourth on his reappearance, he got to within a half-length of Cogry at Cheltenham in a Grade Three contest prior to posting a very solid fourth of nine runners behind Beware The Bear back at Cheltenham on New Years’ Day.

He has form at this venue with a good fifth of 16 back in February behind Classic Ben, finding only one pace; but the extra yardage of his last outing at Taunton in March saw him denied only by a head behind the improving Samuel Jackson, although he perhaps should have won that contest and he idled badly in front to let the eventual winner get back up late having perhaps got to the front too soon.

He doesn’t appear the most straightforward in that respect, and there is a question mark over his attitude in a tight finish; but this trip will hold no fears and he remains with potential for better from this mark so every chance he can make his presence felt and he can post a big effort here.
