Barring an accident this should prove a straightforward reappearance for LAURINA (1/7, Ladbrokes) who is likely to have too much class for her rivals in this Listed contest.

Willie Mullins’ Spanish Moon mare was unbeaten in four starts last term having arrived at the County Carlow handler from France, with her victories including the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival prior to stepping up to this trip to demolish Lackaneen Leader and others at Fairyhouse in April.

She turned that latter Grade One success into a procession, and the form has been boosted with several winners since coming out of that race; she can’t be realistically opposed in this four-runner contest, and it would be a huge shock if she were to fail to win this contest.

Dual-hurdles winner KUPATANA (11/4, Ladbrokes) looked a novice chaser to follow when bolting up at Kempton on her debut over the larger obstacles at Kempton back in November, and Nicky Henderson’s charge subsequently lost little caste in defeat behind a similarly highly-regarded rival next time at Newbury.

The Westerner mare however blundered away all chance early here last time, unseating her rider having not looked entirely fluent at earlier obstacles.

However, she is given another chance on her previous performances, and she can atone for that mishap if none the worse for the experience. Better ground will be in her favour, and she can post a big effort as she bids to get back on track.

Finian’s Oscar won this race in 2017 for Colin Tizzard, and the Dorset handler has already made a habit this campaign of scooping up big TV prizes; ELIXIR DE NUTZ (9/4, William Hill) would well be the latest to pick up a nice prize and the Al Namix gelding can land a hat-trick of wins with success in this contest.

Formerly with Philip Hobbs, the six-year old finished last of six behind Apple’s Shakira on his debut at Cheltenham last January for that handler, after which he fell at Uttoxeter; he subsequently joined the Tizzard yard and showed immediate improvement to find only Thomas Darby too strong on his seasonal return at Cheltenham in October.

The Al Namix gelding has since posted back-to-back wins at Cheltenham, beating Itchy Feet in the first of them to claim the Grade Two Sharp Novices’ Hurdle prior to beating Jarveys Plate back at Prestbury Park in December under a fine front-running ride.

He appeared to win a shade comfortably, and with the runner-up posting an impressive win since in Listed company the form now looks very solid; with the scope to improve further, he looks sure to give another good account, and it would be no surprise to see him posting a big run in pursuit of his hat-trick.

2:40 Wincanton - Lengthen The Odds With BetVictor Handicap Hurdle Cl3 (4yo+ 0-130) 2m5½f

DARK EPISODE (9/1, Bet365) may have needed the experience when finishing third on his hurdles debut at Chepstow in November behind Zanza, and Philip Hobbs’ charge duly built on the run to score next time at Leicester.

That form is only ordinary, but the Getaway gelding won well despite his rider dropping his whip, and the assessor may have underestimated his potential to improve having handed him what appears a very workable mark ahead of his handicap debut.

This is clearly much tougher, but he remains unexposed and he could prove a progressive sort who may have more to offer switching to handicaps; he can post a big run here for all this looks a deep contest on paper.

3:00 Sandown - Unibet Veterans' Handicap Chase (The Final Of The 2018 Veterans' Chase Series) Cl2 (10yo+) 3m

RATHLIN ROSE (10/1, Paddy Power) can get back on the scoresheet having run well here behind Loose Chips back in November when finishing fourth despite possibly needing the run.

David Pipe’s Bonbon Rose gelding boasts a good record at the Esher track, winning three times here which includes the Royal Artillery Gold Cup for a second year running last Febuary, and he wasn’t beaten far when trying to add a second Grand Military Gold Cup to his record in March.

A winner at Ascot over No Duffer, he fell in the Topham Chase at Aintree before failing to stay the trip in the Bet365 Gold Cup on his final outing of the campaign; but he went well for a long way back here latest, and he ought to strip fitter for that return.

The assessor has eased him 2lbs in the weights, and with these conditions no issue he could bounce back at this venue with a solid run, and no surprise to see him going close.

3:15 Wincanton - BetVictor Guaranteed Run For Your Money Handicap Chase Cl2 (5yo+ 0-150) 2m4f

Each runner in the field has something to prove, but it could be worth chancing OPENING BATSMAN (16/1, Bet365) to roll back the years and end his spell in the doldrums.

Harry Fry’s veteran has become increasingly reticent, and recent outings haven’t inspired confidence in the Morozov gelding, latterly finishing only seventh at Ludlow in December behind Beau De Brizais where a change of tactics failed to work the oracle.

However, he possesses a good record at this Somerset venue, winning three times and placing twice from six starts here; he could be worth chancing as a result having been eased a further 1lb in the weights which leaves him now 6lbs below his last winning mark.

While a risky proposition given his recent outings, his return to this venue could spark a revival and despite advancing years and a likely big price he could make a solid return to form.

Opening Batsman can bounce back to form at a big price returned to Wincanton where he has a good record.

3:35 Sandown - 32Red.com Handicap Hurdle Cl2 (4yo+ 0-145) 2m

THISTIMENEXTYEAR (9/2, William Hill) has yet to score over hurdles in four starts, but he was a winner on the flat at Windsor back in October and Richard Spencer’s charge can break his duck here.

The New Approach gelding has found only one too good on each of his last three starts over timber, latterly when denied only by a half-length here in December behind Shaw’s Cross where he was run down late having ran off a true line.

The winner has done the form no harm, and a 5lbs rise in the weights could underestimate his potential for improvement. He can build on that promising return to hurdling to go one better here, and no surprise to see another bold show.
