Bet 1 - £10 Real Money

There are a couple of talented horse running in this Listed race who are potentially well-handicapped, with Benatar’s name standing out over this new, three mile trip. However, I’m finding it very hard to pull away from GOLD PRESENT, who won the race last year for Nicky Henderson and boasts a strong chance of making it two in a row.

The form of Gold Presents victory here last year, where he beat Frodon by three lengths, looking incredibly strong. Behind Frodon - who has been rated at 168 following his Caspian Caviar win – was Becher winner Walk In The Mill, recent Doncaster winner O O Seven and Yala Enki, who went out and won the Grand National Trial two starts later.

Things didn’t go to plan in the spring but Gold Present looked much better on his reappearance in the 1965 Christy Chase. Nico De Bonville’s mount travelled nicely throughout the race and was just found a little lacking for pace as Politologue and Charbel entered the home straight. The form of that was has been boosted and this will be Gold Present’s second-start after a wind op. He’s a very solid favourite.

Bet 2 - £10 Free Bet (£5 Each-Way)

After being chucked in with Ballyoptic, Elegant Escape and Barney Dwan on his chasing debut, De Dollar Man got off the mark over the bigger obstacles with a fine handicap triumph at Exeter, carrying 11-11 to a five-length success. Adam Wedge’s mount disappointed a little during the first half of the year, losing out when the odds-on favourite at Wetherby before finishing fourth when well-fancied in another novice contest.

De Dollar Man was forced to carry top-weight in a Class Three on his reappearance in November and dealt with his burden very well, coming home powerfully to finish two-and-a-half lengths behind Siruh Du Lac in fourth. Williams’ seven-year-old has won on his second start every season he’s been in training and he ran a storming race in a hurdles race over course-and-distance during his novice campaign, losing out to Beyond Conceit and Topofthegame by a neck. I expect De Dollar Man to give a good account of himself.

Sharp Response looks to be the one to back at Haydock this weekend.

Bet 3 - £10 Free Bet

Smith’s seven-year-old has progressed brilliantly throughout 2018. After beginning the year rated 116, Sharp Response has been pushed right up to 135 after staying on for fourth up at Newcastle. In between there have been comfortable victories at Catterick and Carlisle, with Danny Cook’s mount streaking clear to win by seven lengths under top-weight on the second of those occasions.

Sharp Response is yet to win on two previous visits to Haydock, but both those runs came over hurdles and he’s undoubtedly a better horse over fences. I expect he will enjoy the strong challenged posed by the Merseyside venue and he looks to be the one to back.

Bet 4 - £10 Free Bet (£5 Each-Way)

I expect Western Ryder will plunge down the betting after he was a confirmed runner today. Richard Johnson’s mount didn’t run badly in the International Hurdle last weekend and he won well in a bumper around this track two years ago. While he makes a strong case, MONT DES AVALOIRS looks extremely over-priced to me and he’s perfectly placed for an each-way punt.

Paul Nicholls’ charge has always been a horse with an abundance of raw ability and found some good consistency towards the end of his novice campaign. After beginning this season with a run behind Maria’s Benefit in a novice chase, Nicholls dropped Mont De Avaloirs back to hurdles for the Gerry Feilden and the plan almost worked, with the 9/2 shot coming up just half-a-length short of the valiant Global Citizen.

This is a drop in class from that Listed race and he should be suited by the underfoot conditions. While it looks to be an extremely competitive race, a mark of 142 should ensure Mont Des Avaloirs is competitive and he’s perfectly capable of mounting a winning challenge.

If the two each-way bets were only to place, your maximum overall profit would drop to £132.50. However, if all four were to claim victory this Saturday, you’ll have turned your original £10 stake into £252.50!
