Bet 1 – First £10 Bet

It’s interesting to see Derek O’Connor take the ride on OK Corral, considering Barry Geraghty is in Warwick to partner Birchdale in the Leamington. Nicky Henderson’s charge ran a decent race on his chasing debut, scoring a narrow victory when carrying an odds-on price to post, but he’s unlikely to enjoy the good ground and ROCKY’S TREASURE looks hard to oppose.

Kim Bailey’s charge has barely put a foot wrong over fences, winning four of his five starts by 15 lengths or more. Rocky’s Treasure has suffered defeat just once, coming out four lengths behind Santini in the John Francombe at Newbury, where David Bass’ mount jumped well again before being outclassed in the closing stages.

It’s no surprise to see Rocky’s Treasure sitting so prominently in the betting for the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham, as Kim Bailey’s mount jumps so well and looks a very hardy stayer. He should get this double off to a winning start.

It will then be over to CHARBEL at Kempton, as he clashes with Top Notch and Black Corton. While both are dangerous opposition, Kim Bailey’s charge has rediscovered his mojo over recent months and looks capable of continuing his excellent run of form.

Charbel finally found his winning touch at Newbury in October, narrowly defeating Baron Alco when giving almost a stone to the future BetVictor Gold Cup winner. After pushing Politologue close in the Christy Chase, Charbel trounced his rivals in the Peterborough Chase, destroying God’s Own and Tea For Two by eight lengths.

With David Bass in Warwick, Noel Fehily takes the ride again and Charbel certainly has the quality to give Kim Bailey a quick-time across-the-cards double.

Bet 2 – £10 Free Bet 1

Kloud Gate has been really well-backed to win the Lanzarote, having won two lesser handicaps with the minimum of fuss. Darling Maltaix shaped like a classy horse when winning a good handicap at Ascot the last day and could be good enough to cope with a 12-pound hike in rating.

I, however, am never comfortable backing novices - Kloud Gate and Doux Pretender – in Listed handicaps like this and Darling Maltaix still has something to prove. So, with negatives against many near the head of the betting, I’m going to take a chance on MELLOW BEN building on the encouraging form he’s shown throughout the winter.

Chris Gordon started his hurdler out at Cheltenham’s Showcase Meeting, where he was well-beaten behind First Assignment. A much improved performance saw Mellow Ben carry odds of 33/1 into the places as Speedo Boy triumphed at the International Meeting and Tom Cannon’s mount carried that form into Kempton’s Christmas Meeting, where the six-year-old came up less than a length behind rival Erick Le Rouge.

Mellow Ben has improved with every run so far this season. He jumped nicely over course-and-distance on his most recent outing and clearly enjoys a little extra firmness in the ground. 14/1 looks a nice price.

Rocky's Treasure (right) leaps the last alongside Santini (left) in the John Francome Novices Chase.

Bet 3 - £10 Free Bet

A fascinating renewal of the Classic Chase, with many bookmakers going 7/1 the field. Calett Mad is clearly a strong contender, as is Mark Bradstock’s Step Back, but I think DUEL AT DAWN has been treated kindly at the weights and Alex Hales’ charge has the stomach for the challenge.

Since pulling up late in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham, Hales has sent his chaser out just once. Kielan Woods took the ride in the Tommy Whittle, where Duel At Dawn looked rusty and sluggish on the heavy ground, fading from a prominent position to eventually finish seventh.

Duel At Dawn was burdened with 11-9 that day and will be relieved to be carrying 18 pounds less on his back on Saturday. Hales’ stayer has run well around this track in the past and has a couple of victories on good ground to his name. Duel At Dawn has the engine to relish this sort of trip.

Bet 4 – £10 Free Bet

Glen Rocco made excellent late progress to finish second last time out, after sitting last for much of that two-and-a-half-mile handicap. While he, and the consistent Ballykan have to be respected, BARNEY DWAN is the classiest horse in this race and Fergal O’Brien’s top chaser can get back to winning ways at Kempton.

O’Brien’s chaser made his return to action at Newbury in the autumn, where he finished ten lengths behind Charbel and Baron Alco as they fought out the finish. Barney Dwan then recovered brilliantly from some early mistakes to be in there pitching approaching the last at Bangor. Sadly, for O’Brien, Barney Dwan was a little one-paced in the closing stages as Yala Enki got the better of Sir Mangan.

The form of both of his races thus far this season have been boosted and there’s no doubting Barney Dwan has improved between runs. All of his last three victories have come on flat, right-handed tracks like this and first-time cheek pieces could help Noel Fehily’s mount keep his mind on the task at hand.
