Newmarket’s summer festival his headlined by the historic sprint, the July Cup. First run back in the 1870’s, this scorching six-furlong spectacle has been won by some of the sport’s most famous names, with greats like Ormonde, Abernant, Diadem and Marwell featuring on the illustrious roll of honour.

Two weeks out from the 2018 renewal, the ante-post betting market is starting to take shape. With 30 sprinters currently entered, our expert has taken a look through the long ante-post betting list and highlighted one sprinter who currently offers punters plenty of each-way value.

Favourites may have come out on top in five of the past ten renewals of the July Cup, but outsiders have also fared well in this Group One. Almost half of the winners and placers in the past decade carried odds of 12/1 or more, with the average price of a horse filling the places in that time period totalling a staggering 19.5/1.

Given those statistics, it’s well worth looking beyond the market leaders when placing an ante-post bet on the July Cup and there are plenty of entrants who hold appeal.

His performance in the Commonwealth Cup aside, Invincible Army is a very consistent performer, with plenty of pace and an emphatic course-and-distance victory under his belt. Raid was making decent headway in the 2000 Guineas before his path to the post was blocked and David Simcock’s colt may be more comfortable over sprinting distances.

While both hold each-way appeal – along with the talented Dreamfield - the July Cup entrant who makes the loudest claims for each-way selection is Kevin Ryan’s BRANDO.

Brando carried odds of 28/1 into last year’s July Cup, after flopping when the favourite in Duke Of York Stakes. Tom Eaves’ mount travelled well throughout the race and - although he didn’t start well enough to match Harry Angel’s winning burst - finished strongly to beat hot-favourite Caravaggio and claim the third and final place.

Just like in 2017, Brando kicked off his campaign with a comfortable victory in the Abernant Stakes, before locking horns with Harry Angel at York. Clive Cox’s star proved too classy on the day, but Brando ran another creditable race, improving on the 12th place finish he managed in the same race 12 months previous by passing the post second.

A rare trip to Ireland followed, where Brando and Tasleet carried the tag of joint-favouritism to post in the Group Two Greenlands Stakes. Both, however, had to play second-fiddle to Aidan O’Brien, with Merchant Navy and Spirit Of Valour finishing ahead of the market leaders.

Brando has looked in good form this season and his defeat at the Curragh was boosted when Merchant Navy went out and won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Kevin Ryan’s stable star has won three times and finished third on his four visits to flat racing HQ and could give the July Cup favourite’s a serious headache on the final day of this year’s July Festival.
