2018 July Cup final field – Blue Point heads confirmed field of 14 in Saturday’s main event

Jonathan Vine 12 Jul 2018
A view of the runners in last year's July Cup.

Blue Point heads a field of 14 entrants after the final confirmation stage for the July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday.

The prospective battle between Battaash and Lady Aurelia was the main talking point ahead of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, so it was somewhat of a surprise when Blue Point picked off the free-running Battaash to claim a maiden Group One victory. With Harry Angel resigned to the sidelines, Charlie Appleby’s charge will be the main man for Godolphin in this historic race and he currently leads the betting across the boards.

Today’s declaration deadline saw five Ballydoyle runners removed from the mix. US Navy Flag - dropping back to sprinting trips after a couple of Guineas defeats – leads Aidan O’Brien’s assault on the July Cup this year, with stablemates Sioux Nation, Fleet Review, Intelligence Cross and Spirit Of Valour making up the Ballydoyle quintet.

Eqtidaar claimed a surprise victory in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, narrowly beating Richard Fahey’s Sands Of Mali. Both look set to take their chance in the July Cup, with fellow three-year-old Invincible Army also set to oppose his older rivals.

Former winner, Limato return to sprinting after some tame efforts over further trip. Last year’s third, Brando will be joined in the field by seasonal rivals Sir Dancealot and John Gosden’s Dreamfield, who came within a whisker of winning the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The final entrant in the July Cup field is Aussie raider Redkirk Warrior, who has remained in England following a poor showing in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Regular jockey, Regan Bayliss has flown over to take over from Frankie Dettori, as David Hayes aims to bring the July Cup back to Australia.
