This year’s renewal of the Group One July Cup over Newmarket July’s straight six-furlongs is developing into yet another exciting contest. The prestigious sprint race, worth over £500,000 in prize money, has seen many of the sport’s greatest thoroughbred horses claim success on route to becoming Champion Sprinter.

The victory of Muhaarar in 2015 showcased a racehorse of the highest quality utilise their speed effectively on Newmarket’s unique July course. The track is renowned for its gradual downhill descent before a sharp final furlong climb to the winning post, a factor that can be commonly underestimated. Hold-up contenders are routinely seen to best effect at the Suffolk setting, granted a strong pace, and the potential depth of the 2016 Group One July Cup looks set to produce yet another fair race.

Antepost favourite for the contest is Henry Candy’s talented sprinter Twilight Son. The four-year-old followed up his impressive victory in last season’s Haydock Sprint Cup when claiming the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot in June. Ridden by Ryan Moore, Twilight Son produced a valiantly display to win inside the closing stages at Ascot to land a second Group One prize. He leads the market at 5/1 and based on recent form deserves his position atop of the betting.

Next, is the Charlie Hills-trained Magical Memory who finished fourth behind Twilight Son in the Diamond Jubilee, though he earlier defeated that rival when winning the Duke Of York in May. The strapping grey relishes fast underfoot conditions and was caught out by a blunt of his speed at Royal Ascot in which Henry Candy’s inmate battled well to win. Back on quick ground, I expect Magical Memory to reverse the Diamond Jubilee and go close to claiming his first Group One prize at Newmarket in July. He’s worth a saver at 6/1.

However, it is the the five-year-old DANZENO that really catches at around the 16/1 mark for trainer Mick Appleby. This son of Denounce has hit the crossbar throughout a somewhat frustrating career to date. Two Group Three victories have been overshadowed by near-misses at Group One level, most notably in the 2015 July Cup when finishing fifth.

Danzeno travelled superbly throughout last year’s renewal before having to be switched left by jockey Frankie Dettori inside the final two furlongs. It was a move that ultimately damaged any winning claims, though the horse continued to make headway right up to the finishing line. It was Danzeno’s first start on Newmarket’s July course, and the five-year-old clearly enjoyed the downhill nature of the track.

He has made two starts this season in the Duke Of York at York’s Dante meeting as well as a Listed contest at Salisbury in June. Two placed finishes in those events have provided evidence that Mick Appleby’s sprinter retains all of his ability. A return to Newmarket July’s straight six-furlongs, and a strong, fair pace, will see Danzeno at his best as he seeks to claim a well overdue Group One victory.
