2018 July Festival day one tips - 13/1 Group Two double at Newmarket

Our expert has taken a look at both of the Group Twos on the first day of Newmarket’s July Festival and rolled his selections together into this profitable double with William Hill on Thursday.

The first day of Newmarket’s July Festival may not feature a Group One, but there are plenty of races for racing fans to get excited about. The Bahrain Trophy boasts a high-quality roll of honour, while the July Stakes and the Racing Club Stakes offer the entrants the chance to get their hands on a valuable prize.

Our expert has taken a look through the betting for both of the feature Group Twos on Thursday and combined his tips into this double with William Hill.

Thursday’s Group Two Double

Place a £10 bet on our double with William Hill and if both selections went on to win at Newmarket, you'd pocket a tidy return of £137.50.

Van Beethoven brings undoubtedly the best form into the races, having triumphed in a Group Two at the Curragh the last day. That victory means he will have to carry a three-pound penalty into this contest and only one horse shouldering a penalty has managed to win this race since the turn of the millennium.

Legends Of War looked impressive on debut and Konchek has more to give, but I was so impressed with ADVERTISE’S showing in the Coventry Stakes, I fancy Martyn Meade’s juvenile to get the win.

Richard Kingscote was in the saddle as Advertise made his debut, carrying the tag of favouritism to victory at Newbury. After the rest of the top five finishers at Newbury either won or placed second on their following runs, Advertise was fancied by some heading into Royal Ascot and carried odds of 10/1 into the stalls.

Calyx broke out of the stands’ side group and pounded clear to secure an excellent win. Most eyes were on Sergei Prokofiev in the group down the centre of the track, but it was Advertise who finished closest to Calyx, passing the post just a length behind the winner.

After coming up a whisker short of a colt destined for Group One company, it’s understandable to see Advertise leading the way in the betting and conditions look perfect for Frankie Dettori’s mount to claim this valuable prize.

Raa Atoll stayed on creditably for fourth behind Old Persian in the King Edward VII Stakes, but three-year-old’s have a dismal record in this Group Two and the experience of an older entrant is preferred.

Laraaib’s run behind Poet’s Word in the Brigadier Gerard was boosted at Ascot and, despite an uncompetitive showing in the Wolferton Stakes Handicap, he could benefit from the step up in trip. Mirage Dancer was the beaten favourite in that Royal handicap, passing the post-fifth. Sir Michael Stoute’s charge has won a Listed race this season, but he lost out to BARSANTI in the Buckhounds Stakes and I fancy Roger Varian’s stayer to get the better of the favourite once again.

Both were making their reappearance in that Listed race at Ascot and looked a little keen in the early stages. Shadowing each other’s moves from the rear of the field, eventually, it was Barsanti who stayed strongest in the closing stages to score a maiden Listed prize.

Barsanti then went into the Hardwicke Stakes, where he faced an uphill task trying to reel in Crystal Ocean. Mirage Dancer’s stablemate spread-eagled the field as he made a winning charge for home, and Barsanti was unable to finish any better than fourth. The handicapper has been rather harsh, dropping Barsanti’s rating by two pounds – especially when you consider Idaho, who finished ten lengths behind Andrea Atzeni’s mount, was dropped just a pound at the weights.

Unlike his three rivals at the head of the betting, Barsanti has won a Listed race and has placed in much higher quality races than this. Both Varian and Atzeni have been in good form recently and Barsanti is a consistent stayer to be respected.
