Biggest betting races of 2018 – Grand National retains number one spot with 25 Cheltenham Festival races in top 40

Jonathan Vine 18 Jan 2019
The Grand National remains the number one betting race with punters.

Using research conducted and published by the Racing Post, we take a look at the 40 biggest betting races of last year, with the Grand National retaining its position at the top of the list.

At the start of every year, the Racing Post publishes a list of the top 40 biggest betting races of the previous calendar year. Understandably, the Grand National retain it’s position at the head of the list, but the rest of the top 40 makes very interesting reading and emphasise the impact the Cheltenham Festival has on the betting industry.

The top five in the 2018 list is unchanged from the previous year, with the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Epsom Derby, Scottish Grand National and the King George VI Chase following the big one at Aintree. The rest of the top ten is rounded off by Cheltenham Festival races, with the Triumph Hurdle leaping into single-figures, after occupying the 12th position during 2017.

The Gold Cup and the Triumph Hurdle are two of the 25 Cheltenham Festival races to make the top 40 most gambled-on races of 2018. In fact, there are only three races from the Festival which failed to make it into the graphic – the National Hunt Chase, the Kim Muir Handicap Chase and the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

The two biggest movers on the top 40 list are the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Ryanair Chase, up by 14 and 15 places respectively. While the JLT Novices’ Chase has slipped 10 places down the list, the big drifter is the Oaks at Epsom, which plummeted down to 36th place, after sitting just outside the top 20 on 2017’s list.

The Triumph Hurdle's rise in popularity could be partly attributed to Apple's Shakira, who was regarded as a banker of the meeting for many experts and punters leading up to the Cheltenham Festival. In 2019, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Mares' Hurdle leap back into the top 20 on the list, as Apple's Jade - currently an 11/8 shot with William Hill - is sure to attract plenty of backers.

Just ten of the top 40 spots are occupied by flat races and it’s not until the 28th spot on the list until you reach a race featured at Royal Ascot. The St Leger and both the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas have dropped down the top 40 ranking over the past 12 months, but the Epsom Derby and the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe remain as popular as ever.
