2018 Chester Festival news - Quotes from connections on day one

Jonathan Vine 9 May 2018
Ryan Moore (centre) and Aidan O'Brien (right) discuss tactics at Chester last year.

Ahead of day one's card at the Chester Festival, we bring you the latest quotes from the connections of the key runners on Wednesday 9th May.

2:25pm Cheshire Oaks

Magic Wand (7/2 Ladbrokes)
“Magic Wand is a lovely filly and a sister to Chicquita." Aidan O'Brien said to the Irish Examiner.

“She’s had one run on bad ground this year and got a little bit tired. Rather than go back for a maiden now, we’ll let them step into those races as if they won their maiden and they can go back for a maiden any time."

"You would hope that Magic Wand would improve for the better ground, though, after shaping pretty well in heavy at Leopardstown on reappearance; her sister Chicquita won the Irish Oaks on fast ground and she is best drawn of the trio in one. She clearly has a lot to find form-wise, but these trials are just that; all about learning and improving."

Forever Together (12/1 William Hill)
O'Brien continued to the Irish Examiner, “Forever Together hasn’t run this year and is still a maiden as well, but she’s ready to go. We were waiting on the ground and obviously you can’t wait too long,”

"It will be a good experience for them and we’ll see how we go. We will all learn together."

Princess Yaiza (9/1 Paddy Power)
“We’re very happy with her going there." Gavin Cromwell told the Irish Examiner.

"Obviously we’re a bit disappointed with the draw (10 of 10), but if anyone can steer her round there, I think we’ve got the right man on board. I’ve never been to the races at Chester so I’m looking forward to it.”

Kinaesthesia (9/2 Ladbrokes)
“She’s a filly we like a lot. We’re guessing a tiny bit." Andrew Balding told the Irish Examiner.

“She goes very nicely at home. She lacks experience, but so do many of her competitors. We like her and she’ll come on.”

3:35pm Chester Vase

Hunting Horn (3/1 William Hill)
O'Brien remarked to Sky Sports, "He's a horse that ran well in Sandown, so we'll see how that goes."

Ryan Moore via his blog with Betfair
"We know that Hunting Horn is fit and well after two starts this season. He didn't get the run of the race when third to Sevenna Star and Ispolini, who re-opposes here, in the Classic Trial for me at Sandown last time, and that run suggested this step up in trip is well worth a go."

Ispolini (7/2 Paddy Power)
"I was very pleased with Ispolini's seasonal debut at Sandown and he looks to have come on for that race," Trainer Charlie Appleby told

"The step up in trip to a mile and a half will suit him and he should be competitive."

Proschema (15/2 William Hill)
Tom Dascombe told Sky Sports, "He comes back after running only last week, but he seems in great shape."

"It will be the quickest ground he's ever run on, but it shouldn't be a problem. We'll just find out if he's good enough. He's done nothing wrong."

Perfect Illusion (33/1 Betfair)
"It's a little bit difficult to truly asses the merit of that form, but he's a horse we've liked at home and he stays well, which is a plus." Andrew Balding told Sky Sports.

"It looks a strong Chester Vase opposed to normal years. It looks a deep one for horses with chances and I just hope he runs well."

4:05pm Capital Maiden Stakes

Baritone (9/2 Betfair)
Ryan Moore via his blog with Betfair
"He is a Camelot half-brother to a couple of decent winners from the yard, and he also shaped well against a stablemate at Leicester on his reappearance. I thought he was coming to win his race at one point, but perhaps he just got tired in what was very deep ground."

"The winner is okay, too, and we pulled well clear of the third. The better ground here should suit, and he looks to hold a decent winning chance in a maiden we have won in the past, notably with Harbinger, although the draw in 10 is an obvious negative and there are a few in here with a similar profile and form claims, notably Argentello."
