Perfect Clarity and Knight To Behold score surprise Trials victories at Lingfield

A view of a runner at Lingfield.

We bring you the latest developments in the betting for the two Epsom Classics, after Lingfield and the Curragh staged important Trials races on Saturday afternoon.

The first Classic Trial at Lingfield saw a field of fillies look to bolster their Oaks credentials. The Oaks was the only Classic crown which eluded Aidan O’Brien last season and he was hoping favourite Flattering could build on the stunning ten length victory she recorded on heavy ground at Cork last time out.

Despite second-favourite, Stream Song being removed by John Gosden after reporting lame, Flattering was a big drifter before the race, slipping for 11/10 to 6/4 during the build-up. Connections were worried the good-to-firm ground at Lingfield would throw a spanner in the works and those reservations seemed to ring true, as Flattering struggled to a third place finish. Adam Kirby’s mount, Perfect Clarity got the better of Cecchini on the run to the line, despite her jockey dropping his whip a furlong from home.

Clive Cox’s winner was a 50/1 shot in the Oaks before that Lingfield triumph and the bookies have slashed her price since. While Coral go as short as 12/1, William Hill and Betfair offer the best quotes of 12/1, with Flattering slipping from 20s out to 50/1 with Betfair.

In truth, that didn’t seem to be a particularly high-quality Trial and it’s highly doubtful anyone in attendance at Lingfield will have just watched a future Epsom champion.

As Flattering drifted in the betting, stablemate Kew Garden’s was being heavily supported in the Derby Trial at Lingfield. Despite labouring to a third-place finish on his reappearance, Aidan O’Brien’s charge was backed in from 6/4 to odds-on favouritism, as he looked to enhance his Derby credentials and ensure he was part of the Ballydoyle battalion heading to Epsom.

Richard Kingscote bounced into an early lead on Harry Dunlop’s Knight To Behold and the duo set an even gallop. Turning for home, Knight To Behold still held a commanding lead and – despite Ryan Moore’s best efforts on Kew Gardens – none of the field could make up the ground, leaving Kingscote and Dunlop celebrating a tremendous victory.

As Kew Gardens bombed out of Derby contention, Knight To Behold’s price was cut. A 66/1 shot with some firms before the off, Betfair and William Hill go 16/1, with Coral offering a top price of 25/1 on Knight To Behold repeating his Lingfield heroics when he travels to Epsom next month.

Over at the Curragh, all the talk was around Dermot Weld’s Jaega, as she took on her elders in the Group Three Blue Wind Stakes. Jaega was backed into even-money before the off, but the favourite was upstaged by fellow three-year-old Bye Bye Baby, who held on comfortably from the front of the field to hand Aidan O’Brien yet another winner on the day.

The experience Jaega would have gained will stand her in good stead and it would be no surprise if she was supplemented into the Oaks. Bye Bye Baby already held entry into that Epsom Classic and she’s had her odds clipped. Betfair now offer odds of 16/1 on Bye Bye Baby, as it seems Aidan O’Brien has yet another strong to his powerful Oaks bow.
