Cracksman slashed for possible Enable showdown after impressive Ganay victory

Cracksman has had his odds slashed by Ladbrokes for any possible faceoffs with stablemate Enable, after Frankie Dettori rode the Frankel colt to an excellent victory on his reappearance in the Prix Ganay.

Cracksman was the star-attraction for the grand reopening of Longchamp on Sunday and the Champion Stakes victor carried an odds-on price into the Prix Ganay. As the stalls burst open, Dettori slotted Cracksman nicely in behind the pacesetting Wren’s Day, who seemed to be taking the field along at quite the gallop.

Turning for home, Dettori asked his mount to pick up the bit. At times last season, Cracksman looked to hit a flat-spot during in races, yet, there were no signs of that on Sunday. In the blink of an eye the favourite had put the race to bed, with dangerous foes Rhododendron and Cloth Of Stars failing to keep tabs with Cracksman as he sauntered to a near-five length success.

"The great thing is he's won today on good." John Gosden said to the Racing Post following his charge's success. "It’s slightly the faster side of good having walked it, so that’s great, plus he goes in the soft,"

"I was thrilled because as he passed me at the furlong pole he got down and low, he stretched, which is always great to see," he said. "He's a stronger horse this year and is filling out from three to four, let alone four to five. I'm impressed how cool he is, how relaxed and professional he is."

Bookmakers also stood up and took notice as Cracksman cruised past the winning post, with Ladbrokes slashing his odds for all possible appearances this season.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “What a start to the season for Cracksman. Like everyone else, we were mightily impressed, slashing his odds for the Prince Of Wales Stakes and Arc.”

“We might have to wait sometime before Cracksman and Enable meet this season, but our traders simply can’t separate them.”

Enable cruising to an impressive victory in last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Another onlooker at Longchamp to have been taken by Cracksman’s reappearance was Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Prince Khalid Abdullah – owner of Cracksman’s stablemate Enable.

In an interview with AtTheRaces, Grimthorpe confirmed Enable has been working well at home and last year’s horse of the year will make her reappearance in the Coronation Stakes at Epsom. Whereas Gosden and Dettori have been keen to swerve talk of a possible match race between Cracksman and Enable, Grimthorpe gave fans an insight into their party’s thinking.

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – won so brilliantly last year by Enable – looks to be the most obvious place for the stablemates to faceoff and Ladbrokes were quick to slash Cracksman’s odds if the two were to return to Longchamp in October.

In a development that will certainly excite fans, Teddy Grimthorpe confirmed Enable will target the defence of her King George crown before heading to Longchamp and even claimed the team “wouldn’t shirk” a possible showdown with Cracksman in a possible July showdown at Ascot.

Enable remains the favourite to get the better of her stablemate in the betting for both the King George and the Arc. However, after such a brilliant performance over a mile-and-a-quarter in the Prix Ganay, Ladbrokes make Cracksman the favourite to beat Enable if the two were to face off in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and they can't seperate John Gosden's duo in the special match bet market.
