2018 Epsom Derby hero Masar to miss remainder of the season

2018 Epsom Derby hero Masar was ruled out for the remainder of the 2018 season on Sunday by trainer Charlie Appleby following scans on the colt's injury which saw him miss the Coral Eclipse.

Epsom Derby winner Masar, who had been due to contest the recent Coral Eclipse Stakes but subsequently withdrawn through injury will miss the rest of the season after the setback was confirmed to be worse than first thought.

News of the injury broke on Sunday morning after a scan taken on Saturday revealed damage to the soft tissue in the horse’s off-fore leg, and trainer Charlie Appleby following discussions with Godolphin decided to rest the son of New Approach for the remainder of his three-year old season.

The colt had given the famous blue silks their first Derby winner when holding off the challenges of Dee Ex Bee and subsequent Eclipse winner Roaring Lion to win the colts’ Classic at Epsom, and following initial reports of his injury, he had been responding well to treatment with connections confident the three-year old would soon be back on the course. The colt also gave trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick their maiden Derby success with his Epsom heroics.

But following Sunday’s news, he’ll now be put away for the rest of the season to recuperate ahead of a four-year old campaign which could include targets such as the Coronation Cup, King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

"The vet has seen a change in the soft-tissue damage to Masar's off-fore, and after speaking to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, we have decided to call a halt to the colt's season immediately.” Appleby told the Racing Post.

“Sheikh Mohammed is keen for Masar to run again at four, and if we are to deliver on that the best option is to give him a long break.”

Vets recommended a minimum of two months’ rest for the Classic hero, meaning Appleby would have little time to prepare Masar for any potential targets, and he now will miss out on possible runs in the Irish Champion Stakes, and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
