Horse racing fixtures 23-29 April - Punchestown, Perth and Sandown amongst this weeks highlights

Sandown are racing over two days this week.

Brian Healy takes a look ahead to this week's horse racing action across the UK and Ireland, with Punchestown and Sandown featuring on the week's schedule.


The last of the big jumps racing Festivals goes to post this week as Punchestown hosts its’ equivalent to the Cheltenham Festival with a five-day feast of top-class racing spearheading this week’s fixture list.

The week also brings the curtain down on the jumps season, as Sandown’s Saturday racecard features the traditional end-of-season Bet365 Gold Cup as well as the Grade One Celebration Chase. 

MONDAY 23 APRIL


Six meetings go to post on Monday’s fixture list as a new week of horse racing action gets underway. 

The afternoon’s fixtures take in jumps racing meetings at Newton Abbot and Hexham, while Pontefract races on the flat. Meanwhile, in the evening there is flat racing action at Windsor, as well as Navan in Ireland; while Sedgefield race over the sticks.

Newton Abbot (jumps) - 1.30 - 4.30pm (7 races)
Hexham (jumps) - 1.50 - 4.55pm (7 races)
Pontefract (flat) - 2.10 - 5.45pm (8 races)
Navan (flat) - 4.25 - 8.00pm (8 races)
Windsor (flat) - 4.50 - 7.50pm (7 races)
Sedgefield (jumps) - 5.10 - 8.10pm (7 races)

Windsor are racing on Monday.


TUESDAY 24 APRIL


Tuesday’s fixture list of horse racing will see a further six UK and Irish meetings going to post, where day one of the Punchestown Festival dominates proceedings. The feature race at the Irish track is the Boylesport Champion Chase, which gets underway at 5.30pm, while there are two further Grade One races also on the card.

Elsewhere, there is afternoon jumps racing action at Exeter and Ludlow, while Yarmouth race on the flat; in the evening, there is further flat racing at Brighton, while Huntingdon stages a jumps card to complement the card in Ireland.

Yarmouth (flat) - 1.50 - 5.40pm (8 races)
Ludlow (jumps) - 2.00 - 5.15pm (7 races)
Punchestown (jumps) - 3.40 - 7.15pm (7 races)

Huntingdon (jumps) - 4.35 - 8.00pm (7 races)

WEDNESDAY 25 APRIL


The Punchestown Festival enters its’ second day of racing action, and a further three Grade One contests go to post with the Punchestown Gold Cup the feature race of the late-afternoon racecard.

Elsewhere, Perth kicks off their own three-day festival over the sticks; while on the flat there are meetings in the afternoon at both Catterick and Epsom.

In the evening meanwhile are meetings on the all-weather at Lingfield, and over the sticks at Taunton to round off the day.

THURSDAY 26 APRIL


Six is again the magic number, and six meetings will go to post across the UK and Ireland, headlined again by the action in Ireland where the Ryanair Novice Chase heads up the third day of racing at Punchestown.

Perth meanwhile host their second day of racing north of the border and joins Warwick on the afternoon’s jumps schedule; while Beverley race on the flat.

In the evening there is further jumps racing from the card at Kempton, while Chelmsford race on the all-weather on Thursday evening.

FRIDAY 27 APRIL


A further six UK and Irish horse racing cards take place on Friday, with Punchestown racing over the sticks for a fourth day with the Punchestown Champion Hurdle spearheading the card in Ireland.

Perth are also racing over the sticks as their Festival draws to a close on Friday; while on the flat there are meetings at Doncaster, and also Sandown where the Bet365 Mile heads up the action at the Esher venue.

In the evening there is jumps racing from Towcester, and also Chepstow.

SATURDAY 28 APRIL


Seven meetings across the UK and Ireland go to post on Saturday, with the Punchestown Festival entering its’ final day with more Grade One action; while at Sandown the curtain falls on the 2017/18 jumps season with the Bet365 Gold Cup going to post on a card which also features the Grade One Celebration Chase.

On the flat meanwhile are afternoon fixtures at Haydock, Leicester and Ripon; while in the evening there is a further meeting on the flat on turf at Doncaster, and also on the all-weather at Wolverhampton.

The week closes on a low note with just three meetings going to post, where the day’s flat racing action comes from the cards at Salisbury and Wetherby; while Gowran Park in Ireland is also racing on the level.
