Magic Wand and Young Rascal slashed in Epsom betting after Classic Trials victories at Chester

We bring you the latest betting developments in the betting for the Epsom Oaks and the Derby, after several trials were staged on day one of Chester’s May Festival.

The first Classic Trial on Wednesday’s card was the Cheshire Oaks, won last year by Arc heroine Enable. Aidan O’Brien saddled three fillies in this historic race, with Ryan Moore’s chosen mount, Magic Wand shortening at the head of the betting just before the odd.

An inside draw is crucial at Chester and, after bounding out of stall one, Moore and Magic Wand were left free at the head of affairs to dictate their own tempo. With little competition for the pace, Moore was able to kick on rounding the bend and score an extremely comfortable victory, with stablemate and market mover, Forever Together overtaking Princess Yaiza down the home straight to hand O’Brien a 1-2.

Before the Cheshire Oaks, Magic Wand could have been found at 50/1 for the Oaks at Epsom, with Forever Together and even less fancied 100/1 shot. Magic Wands’ odds have been understandably slashed following a very taking victory, with Betfair offering the best price of 16/1. Forever Together also had her odds clipped and Betfair, again, offer the best price, quoting odds of 20/1.

Ralph Beckett’s Kinaesthesia split the O’Brien runners at the head of the betting before the odd, but after missing the break from an outside draw, she trailed over the line last. A 33/1 shot in the Epsom Oaks before the off, she’s drifted out to 50s and is highly unlikely to even make the cut in the second fillies’ Classic of the season.

Aidan O’Brien’s name topped the list of entries for the second Trial at Chester, with Hunting Horn carrying the tag of favouritism to post in the Chester Vase. O’Brien claimed a 1-2-3 in the race last year - with future Derby winner, Wings Of Eagles finishing second to Venice Beach – and the Ballydoyle maestro was hoping Family Tree and Flag Of Honour would be able to join Hunting Horn on the Chester podium.

It’s been impossible to keep William Buick, Charlie Appleby and Godolphin out of the headlines in recent months and Ispolini looked to be the big danger to the Ballydoyle battalion. Young Rascal was also well-backed in the build-up, with Proschema subject to a similar late gamble, despite being drawn out wide in stall nine.

Flag Of Honour bolted out the traps to cut out the running, with Proschema, Hunting Horn and Ispolini slotted in behind. Turning for home, the leaders tried to pick up, but it was Young Rascal who bustled between the pace setters and held off the rallying Dee Ex Bee to hand William Haggas a wonderful victory in a key Derby Trial.

Young Rascal is owned by Bernard Kantor, the director of Derby sponsors Investec, so he will be delighted to see his horse enter the Epsom picture. A 33/1 shot before the race, Young Rascal can now be found at a best price of 16/1 to win the Derby with Betfair. Betfair, however, seemed rather unimpressed with this trial and clipped Derby favourite Saxon Warrior into 10/11 from Evens, as Aidan O’Brien’s Guineas winner looks to land the second leg of the fabled triple crown.
