2018 St Leger confirmed runners – Lah Ti Dar heads field of twelve for final Classic of the season

The final field has been declared for Saturday’s St Leger, with Lah Ti Dar topping the betting after she was confirmed as a runner by John Gosden on Thursday 13th September.

Lah Ti Dar’s fans had resigned themselves to the fact that John Gosden’s filly probably wouldn’t be strutting her stuff in the St Leger. After that empathic victory at York, connections declared Sunday’s Prix Vermeille would be their destination of choice. However, when it became clear the ground would be more favourite at Doncaster this weekend, Gosden announced on Thursday that Lah Ti Dar will run in Saturday’s Classic.

Aidan O’Brien’s Kew Gardens had led the betting for much of the build-up, but after Gosden broke the news of Lah Ti Dar’s inclusion, she leapfrogged the Queen’s Vase winner at the head of the betting. Race sponsors William Hill currently list Lah Ti Dar as the 15/8 favourite, with Kew Gardens sitting just behind on 2/1.

Old Persian got the better of a penalty-carrying Kew Gardens when winning the Great Voltigeur at York and Charlie Appleby’s colt is the 7/1 third-favourite. He will be joined in the field by stablemate Loxley,  who’s been priced up at 11/1 to win the Leger after connections chose Doncaster over an outing in Sunday’s Prix Niel.

Kew Gardens will be accompanied on the plane to Doncaster by Southern France, a general 14/1 shot with most bookmakers. Nelson, The Pentagon and Zabriskie complete the Ballydoyle quintet in this year’s Leger, with all three baring pretty lengthy prices in the current market.

Dee Ex Bee has been unable to repeat the performance which saw him claim second in the Derby, but Mark Johnston has handed his colt another crack at a Classic this weekend. Raymond Tusk was a surprise entrant in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown and Richard Hannon has handed his young stayer another Group One outing in the St Leger.

Maid Up earned herself a supplementary entry into the St Leger with a smart victory over this trip at Goodwood and Andrew Balding’s filly has been handed odds of 20/1 by William Hill. Tom Dascombe’s Proschema rounds off Saturday’s field and it would be a huge surprise if the 66/1 shot could rival the likes of Lah Ti Dar and Kew Gardens at the upper end of the betting.
