2019 Lincoln Handicap tips - Two against the field for Doncaster's opening day feature on the flat

The Lincoln Handicap headlines Saturday's Doncaster racecard as the 2019 Flat racing season on turf gets underway.

Brian Healy picks out his two against the field for Saturday's Lincoln Handicap, the feature race of Saturday's opening day of the new UK Flat racing season at Doncaster.

The 2019 UK Flat racing season on turf kicks off on Saturday for the first of two day’s horse racing action on the level at Doncaster as the curtain raising Lincoln Meeting goes to post.

The feature race over the two days is the latest renewal of the hugely competitive Lincoln Handicap, which gets underway at 3.35pm as the fourth race of the afternoon on a seven-race card at Town Moor, and the famous handicap contest promises to be yet another exciting affair to set the tone for the rest of the Flat season with a maximum field of 22 runners set to enter the gates.

A classy and competitive contest, recent winners of this contest include the likes of Addeybb, Bravery and Gabrial amongst others, and Brian Healy picks out his two against the field for the latest renewal of this prize which carries a first prize pot in excess of £60,000 for the winner.

David Barron’s KYNREN (9/1, William Hill) was a multiple winner during the 2017 Flat season, and the Clodovil gelding finished third in the Spring Mile on this card twelve months ago when beaten just under three lengths behind High Acclaim and faring best of those runners drawn high.

He continued in good form last term without adding to his three wins, but he did make the frame in a trio of big-field handicaps which include going down only by a neck behind Poet’s Society in the Clipper Logistics Handicap at York.

The five-year old was far from disgraced in his final two outings of the season, finishing sixth in the Cambridgeshire and then going one place better in the Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day, where he crossed the line two lengths’ fifth behind Sharja Bridge.

He turns out here from 1lb lower in the weights than at Ascot, and the prospect of a strongly-run race will suit. Proven in big fields, he has also shown he can go well fresh, and with course form to call upon it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to see him post a big run in this competitive contest.

ZWAYYAN (16/1, William Hill) arrives fit from the all-weather having had a start on the Wolverhampton tapeta; Andrew Balding’s charge ran out a one length winner over Breden on that occasion, and the Pivotal gelding ought to be much sharper for the run.

A useful performer for William Haggas previously, winning four times in all for that handler, he joined his current yard last term and subsequently posted a series of solid runs without being able to add to his tally until going in at Chelmsford in August.

The six-year old then chased home Silver Quartz at Ascot in the Weatherbys Handicap, although he subsequently ran down the field in both starts following that near miss in the Cambridgeshire and Balmoral Handicap respectively.

A change of tactics last time appeared to work, and he was ridden with more restraint than had been the case previously; having got a good tow into the contest, he quickened up readily, and he won with something to spare.

While he has a penalty to carry for that success, he could again prove competitive if adopting similar more patient tactics, and a strong pace to the race will suit. He probably does need to find another jolt of improvement to defy his penalty, but he could well prove up to the task with fitness assured which could prove a big advantage to his chances.
