2019 Epsom Derby day tips - Three horses to back at Epsom with bet365

A view of the stands as the runners cross the line in the Epsom Dash.

Our expert takes a look through all of Saturday’s big races at Epsom on Saturday 1st June and picks out three horses who could earn you a fantastic ITV Racing bonus with bet365.

Millions of eyes around the globe will be locked on Epsom tomorrow afternoon, as a field of talented colts takes to the famous downs to battle it out in the Epsom Derby. Along with that fabled Classic, Saturday’s card at Epsom features two strong Grouped races and the frenetic Epsom Dash Handicap Sprint.

Sign up with bet365 today and, if you back a winner at odds of 4/1 or longer in any ITV Race, bet365 will give you a matched stake free bet of up to £50 to use in that day’s feature race. Here are three horses who could earn you a free bet to use in the Epsom Derby with bet365.

2:00pm Investec Private Banking Handicap (Class 2) 1m2f

Mark Johnston will fire three arrows at this opening handicap, with Nayef Road dropping back into handicap company after a decent effort in the Dante. Ryan Moore’s mount will be giving some talented horses a huge stack of weight tomorrow afternoon and the one who catches my eye is his stablemate THE TRADER (NAP), who has impressed since stepping up in trip and looks significantly overpriced to me.

After storming to two impressive novice victories last summer, The Trader came up short on his first start in Listed company, finishing fourth as Boitron won the Denford Stakes. Following a strong second behind Fox Premier in a hot handicap on the all-weather on his reappearance, Johnson then threw The Trader into the London Gold Cup at Newbury.

Despite drifting out to 33/1 before the off, this son of Mastercraftsman gave an excellent account of himself that day, running on strongly to finish fifth, just four-and-a-half-lengths behind impressive winner Headman. That race is notorious for producing future winners and The Trader will carry eight pounds less on his back today than he did at Newbury.

Silvestre De Sousa’s mount looks a well-balanced sort who should deal with the challenges poses by this tricky track. Being drawn out in stall nine shouldn’t pose a problem either. 8/1 looks massive to me!

2:35pm Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored By Investec) (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) 1m½f

This race looks particular difficult to decipher, with Veracious heading the betting, despite a fairly tame reappearance in a fairly poor Group Two at Newmarket last month. Nyaleti and Awesometank are not without claims, but I’d like to pin my colours to ANNA NERIUM, who ran nicely behind one of her Epsom rivals at Goodwood last time out and has unfinished business in this lucrative Group Three.

Richard Hannon’s filly got off to a sluggish start in this race last year and remained out the back as the leaders passed the two poll. Just when it seemed Wilamina was going to power to a convincing victory, Anna Nerium scythed through the pack and came within half-a-length of pipping the winner to the post.

Anna Nerium and Awesometank locked horns in the Listed Conquerer Fillies’ Stakes at Goodwood at the start of May and there was only a neck between the two as they crossed the line. Any of the top four fillies in this race could win on any given day. I just like the fact that Anna Nerium has proven form on this tricky course and travels to Epsom on the back of a solid performance.

3:45pm Investec "Dash" Handicap (Class 2) 5f

It will be interesting to see how Muthmir copes in his first start in handicap company for a number of years and Caspian Prince, a three-time winner of the Dash, is another classy sort who cannot be overlooked. Duke Of Firenze is perfectly capable of carrying a penalty to victory here. I, however, would rather back DARK SHOT, who came up just a neck short of Duke Of Firenze at York last time and has shown himself capable of winning off his current mark.

Dark Shot came to Epsom for the first time in 2017 to take part in the Dash. A shocking start left Martin Dwyer’s mount stranded out the back of the pack. Yet, Dark Shot finished better than any of his rivals and was only denied an incredible victory by the hardy Caspian Prince. Scott Dixon’s sprinter returned to Epsom as the 4/1 favourite to win a Class Two Handicap back in April and, despite losing out to Just That Lord, ran another fine race to finished a neck-second.

Paddy Mathers’ steed then followed a decent fifth behind the imperious Copper Knight at York with that narrow defeat to Duke Of Firenze. Being drawn in stall nine should allow Dark Shot to latch onto the early pace, wherever that may be, and his current mark of 86 looks entirely workable. He looks a solid each-way proposition at 10/1.
