Friday 1 February horse racing tips - Gosden runner has the Spirit to win at Newcastle

Brian Healy 31 Jan 2019
John Gosden can get amongst the winners at Newcastle.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and best bets across Friday's UK and Irish horse racing meetings.

The cold snap continues to decimate the scheduled jumps action across the UK on Friday is wiped out once more with the loss of both scheduled meetings at Catterick and Chepstow.

Their loss leaves only all-weather action to fill the void and in the afternoon the all-weather tracks at Wolverhampton and Lingfield both see action; while in the evening there are meetings at Newcastle on tapeta, and also Dundalk in Ireland on polytrack.

Wolverhampton (flat, aw) - 1.00 - 4.40pm (8 races)
Lingfield (flat, aw) - 1.45 - 4.30pm (6 races)
Newcastle (flat, aw) - 4.15 - 7.45pm (8 races)
Dundalk (flat, aw) - 5.00 - 8.30pm (8 races)

FRIDAY 1 FEBRUARY NAP SELECTION

WOLVERHAMPTON

(1.30) BABY GAL (7/2, Bet365) has made the frame in two of her last three starts, latterly beaten just under two lengths at Lingfield behind Mr Andros.

Jim Boyle’s Royal Applause mare has yet to tackle a tapeta surface, having done all her all-weather racing on polytrack; but she comes into this race in decent heart, and unchanged at the weights following her consistent recent outings she could go close to getting back on the winning trail

While she hasn’t won since her second career start back in May 2016, she has posted several solid runs from much higher marks than this, and in a weak race she could double her win tally if proving effective on this surface.

Charlie Appleby can get amongst the winners at Wolverhampton on Friday.

(3.10) WINGS OF TIME (7/4, Bet365) looked very much in need of his first start at Newmarket back in September, slowly away and then showing marked inexperience.

However, she caught the eye running on late once the penny dropped, and sure to have learnt plenty from that first run then Charlie Appleby’s charge could prove a different proposition now.

The form of that race is working out quite well, and he had a multiple winner behind him in that first run; sure to do better now, the Invincible Spirit gelding can get off the mark at the second attempt with improvement assured.

1.00 - Admirable Art
1.30 - Baby Gal
2.05 - One Liner
2.40 - Foxrush Take Time
3.10 - Wings Of Time
3.40 - Geordieland
4.10 - Destiny’s Rock
4.40 - Macs Blessings

LINGFIELD

(2.20) Everything seemed to fall into place for LOS CAMACHOS (7/4, Bet365) at Wolverhampton three days ago, with David Evans’ charge making the most of his sliding handicap mark to get back to winning ways in a claimer.

The Camacho gelding had a head to spare at the line over Mister Music, holding on well having been given an enterprising ride from the front under his 5lbs claimer; he may not get an uncontested lead this time around however, but he could prove hard to beat nonetheless turned out quickly.

(3.25) None of this quintet can be ruled out, but it could be worth chancing WATERSMEET (4/1, Bet365) to get back on the scoresheet given that unlike some of his rivals he is at least proven over this trip.

Mark Johnston’s Dansili gelding was a winner at Kempton back in November, beating Higher Power, and he has made the frame in both starts since at Newcastle and Wolcerhampton; latterly finishing third behind Aircraft Carrier.

He is a course and distance winner, and he turns out here 3lbs below the mark from which he posted his last win at this venue, and only 1lb higher than his last win. Guaranteed to stay this two mile trip, he can make the most of his stamina to get back to winning ways.

1.45 - Yusra
2.20 - Los Camachos
2.55 - Water’s Edge
3.25 - Watersmeet
3.55 - Key To Power
4.30 - C Note

Lingfield's Friday fixture is one of five going to post.

NEWCASTLE

(5.45) PLAYFULL SPIRIT (6/4, Bet365) showed some fair form last summer, making the frame three times which include here when finding only Fountain Of Time too strong, and John Gosden’s charge may be able to get off the mark this time around.

The Invincible Spirit filly has finished third on both starts back following a six month absence, beaten just one length into the bronze medal slot behind Breathtaking Look here in November, and then going down by two lengths behind First Link at Lingfield in January.

She was run down late on that occasion having raced freely, and first-time cheekpieces could help her to better focus her energies. A consistent sort, she could have further improvement to come and she can open her account.

(7.15) Those who have had the benefit of a run don’t set the bar particularly high, so debutant WISE WORDS (5/4, Bet365) could be up to the task of making a winning introduction.

The Sepoy filly represents a yard who aren’t adverse to sending out a first-time winner, and having fetched a decent price as a yearling, she could prove herself a potentially useful recruit given she is related to some fair winning types.

She rates a very interesting newcomer, and she probably wouldn’t need to be anything special at this early stage to collect this prize; she can make a winning debut for her shrewd yard.

4.15 - Claire Underwood
4.45 - Creationist
5.15 - Cadeau D’amour
5.45 - Playfull Spirit
6.15 - Glory Of Paris
6.45 - Orobas
7.15 - Wise Words
7.45 - Dodgy Bob

DUNDALK

(6.00) THEOBALD (5/2, Bet365) never quite hit the promised heights following his debut success, but he did make the frame in Graded company earlier in his career, and Jim Bolger’s charge arrives here in good form having won two of his last three starts over course and distance.

The Teofilo colt latterly ran out a comfortable winner over Captain Joy in January, scoring by just over one length, and the form has largely been upheld since with several runners from that contest going on to post further in-the-frame finishes.

This longer trip is a slight concern, and he has failed to beat a rival on his only prior starts over this trip or beyond; but he shaped latest as if he was worth another try at this distance, and given his recent spell of good form he is worth chancing to turn in another solid run.

Jim Bolger can get amongst the winners at Dundalk.

(7.00) ISCOSCELES (10/1, Bet365) shaped well on his debut run here in November when finishing seventh to Pennsylvania Avenue, and Mick Halford’s charge can find some improvement for that experience to get off the mark at the second attempt.

The Rulership colt kept on well at the one pace having looked green early, crossing the line around five lengths adrift of the winner, and the runner-up from that contest has won since to give the form something of a boost.

He ought to be suited by a stiffer test, so it is no surprise to see the Godolphin runner upped in trip for this outing, and open to progress on the back of that first outing then he could go well here.

5.00 - Danz Gift
5.30 - Reckless Lad
6.00 - Theobald
6.30 - Pampushka
7.00 - Isosceles
7.30 - Latchet
8.00 - Royal Court
8.30 - Lapilli
