Chief Ironside is yet to truly prove he's anything more than useful handicapper and I’d be shocked if either Success Days or the now ten-year-old Gabrial still had enough in their legs to win a race of this standard. Matterhorn has progressed onto a very high-rating, thanks to his all-weather exploits, but he’ll have to prove himself all over again on turf and Mark Johnson is one of the first to admit that some horses simply like all-weather racing more than on standard surfaces.

Forest Ranger won this race nicely last season and has to be in with a squeak again following a strong showing in the Earl OF Sefton. ADDEYBB, however, is the clear class angle in this race and William Haggas’ charge should relish the underfoot conditions.

Smart victories in the Lincoln and the bet365 Mile saw Addeybb head into the Lockinge as one of the market leaders. Once word got out that the four-year-old didn’t like quick ground, Addeybb’s odds drifted alarmingly before that historic Group One and the former favourite ran accordingly, fading out of contention in the final two furlongs.

Haggas then decided to weight for the ground to soften before getting his charge back out on the track. That didn’t happen until Champions Day at the end of the season, where Addeybb was well-beaten behind Roaring Lion in the QEII, but Addeybb did manage to register a decent performance on his all-weather debut at Lingfield, finishing a neck-third in the Listed Churchill Stakes when giving weight to two rivals who boast much more experience on artificial surfaces.

It’s been over a year since Addeybb won the bet365 Mile is flying fashion, meaning he will not have to shoulder a penalty in this Group Two. Chester is an unknown quality for James Doyle’s mount, but he should be able to slot in nicely behind the pacemakers after being drawn in stall five and I’ve be surprised if he didn’t prove himself to be the best horse in the race.
