Desirous finished second to two 1000 Guineas contenders in Dandhu and Qabala last term, breaking her maiden tag with a hard-fought victory at Kempton on her final start. PENNYWHISTLE came up half-a-length short of her rival that day, which wasn’t a bad result considering she was giving Ralph Beckett’s filly seven-pounds at the weights and, after an encouraging reappearance, she’s fancied to turn the tables on her market rival.

Frankie Dettori was in the saddle as Pennywhistle made her reappearance at Chelmsford, but the duo got off to an inauspicious start, stumbling badly as she wrestled her was out of the blocks. Dettori was forced to switch right as the runners entered the home-straight, but John Gosden’s filly was eating into the leader’s advantage with every stride before the finishing line arrived.

Gosden’s horses often come on from their first runs of the season and that should give this daughter of Iffraaj a fitness edge over Desirous. Dettori will need to start swiftly to find a good position from stall one, but it’s hard to imagine Pennywhistle being as untidy out of the blocks on Friday, as she was at Chelmsford, and she could be hard to peg back once she hits the front.
