Dell Oro will be many people’s idea of a winner, having run well for fourth in a high-quality novices handicap at Kempton over Christmas. Embole has to be in the discussion too, having run well behind Style De Garde on his chasing debut. Yet, I find myself drawn to NIVEN, who scored on his stable debut last month and could have more to give now pitched into handicap company.

During his time with Noel Meade, Niven produced some excellent runs over fences. First, pushing Judgement Day close over this trip at Kilbeggan, before coming within a length of upsetting Delta Work, who’s likely to be amongst the market leaders for the RSA at the Cheltenham Festival.

On his first start in Britain, Phil Kirby switched Niven to a left-handed track, dropped him down in trip and sent him out on heavy ground for the first time in his career. Yet, the six-year-old still travelled nicely and comfortably pulled clear of his rivals to win by eight lengths.

Based on the horses he came up against over in Ireland, 132 looks a fairly lenient mark to carry on his handicap debut. Returning to two-and-a-half-miles, especially on good ground, should be favourable too and Richard Johnson looks an excellent jockey booking. I expect Niven to go really well.
